CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER BHĀGINEYYA-UPĀLI That World Leader is accompanied by a thousand Immortals. Attached to solitude, he went (alone) to meditate. As a person dressed in goat skin carrying three walking sticks (to store utensils), I have seen the World Leader surrounded by the Order of Bhikkhus. I have put a goatskin on one shoulder and then clasped my hands over my head. After paying homage to the Fully Enlightened One, I praised the World Leader saying: “ Just like the species that are born in an egg, the species that are born in a humid place, the species that have a transmigration, the species that are born from water, all the species that have wings like crows, etc. There is always movement in the air . Whatever class has life and existence, whether fictitious or non-perceived, all of them are included in His wisdom . And all the fragrances of the mountains in the highest Himalayan mountain, all of which are not compared with a part of His precepts (scents) . This world, including the gods, is plunged into the darkness of delusion. And His wisdom in the light destroyed the darkness . Like when the sun has set, beings go to darkness; Similarly when the Buddha does not appear, the world goes to ignorance . Supreme Buddha, just as the rising sun always dispels darkness, so also he destroys ignorance . Having the affirmation of effort, he is the Buddha in the world including the gods. By being satisfied with his work, he has made many sentient beings happy ." After rejoicing over all this, the Great Sage Padumuttara the Wise ascended into the air, like a king swan in the sky. Having ascended into the air, the All-Enlightened One, the Great Hermit Padumuttara, the Guru, standing in the air uttered these verses: “ Whoever praises this wisdom by relating similes, I will praise him. People, listen to Me . He will become the Heavenly King eighteen times, and will reign over the land kingdom of the earth three hundred times . And (that person) will become the Wheel-turning One twenty-five times. The kingdom's territory was vast, incalculable . In a hundred thousand aeons (later), a Master named Gotama, of the Okkāka clan, will appear in the world . Motivated by the element of purity, after his death from the Dāta heaven itself, (he) will be named Upāli, even though he is lowly in descent . And later on, he will leave home and will renounce evil. After knowing thoroughly about all the taints, (he) will Nirvana without any contraband . Delighted, the Buddha Gotama, the Sakya son of great fame, will establish the one who has known the Law in the supreme position ." Due to faith, I have left the home life, my duties have been completed, and there is no more contraband. After thoroughly knowing about all piracy, I live free of contraband. And the Blessed One had pity on me. I have confidence in Law. Satisfied with my own karma, I live free of corruption. Contained in the precepts of Pātimokkha and in the five senses, I hold the whole of the Vinaya which is the source of the birth of the jewel. And the Supreme Master in the world has known my virtue. After sitting down in the Assembly of Bhikkhus, he established me in the supreme position. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Upāli said these verses thus. The record of the elder Bhāgineyya-Upāli is the first part. –OoOoo– 42. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER SOṆAKOṬIKAṆṆA I have done the plastering with lime and thus have built the path of the Wise Anomadassī, the Supreme Being of the world. I have paved the passage with flowers of different colors. After making the canopy in the air, I took care of the meal until the supreme Buddha. I have folded my hands and have bowed down to the one with good practice. At that time, I dedicated the long lecture hall to the Blessed One. Knowing my intention, the worldly Supreme Master, the World-Honored One, received it out of compassion. After receiving it, the Fully Enlightened One worthy of offering (in the world) also the gods sat down at the Assembly of Bhikkhus and uttered these verses: “ Whoever with a joyful heart has made a long lecture hall for Me, I will praise him. People, listen to Me . At the time of death of the person who has this meritorious kamma, there will immediately be present the chariot that will win a thousand horses . This man will go to the world of gods in that chariot. When good things are accomplished, the gods will rejoice . (This person) will dwell in a palace with noble pointed roofs, extremely valuable, first in the palaces, plastered with treasures and clay . (This person) will rejoice in the world of gods for thirty thousand kalpas, and will become a heavenly king for twenty-five kalpas . And (this person) will become the Wheel-turning One seventy-seven times. They all share the same name Yasodhara with the same meaning . After enjoying the two achievements and accumulating the accumulation of merit, (this person) will become a Wheel-turning King in the twenty-eighth life . Also in that place, there was a noble palace that was manifested by the god Vissakamma. (This person) will dwell in a city that is bustling with these ten kinds of noises . Countless kalpas later, (this person) with the name Okkāka will be the king in the land, the protector of the earth with great divine power. And that noble woman out of all 16,000 women, the noble-born Shaddi, will give birth to nine children . After giving birth to nine children, the Shaddi woman will die. Another young and beloved woman will be the queen of the palace . Having pleased King Okkāka, the daughter will gain favor. After gaining favor, that daughter will exile her children . And those exiled sons will go to the ultimate (Greek) mountain. Due to the fear of the separation of the lineage, all of them lived with their sisters . And a daughter will be hurt by many diseases. The kings of kings will bury her (she is in the pit, saying): 'Do not separate from our lineage.' There is a king of kings who will take her away and live with her. At that time the separation of the Okkāka family origin will appear . Their descendants will belong to a lineage named Koliya. They enjoyed not a small amount of human wealth in that place . After dying from that body, (this person) will go to the world of gods. Also in that place, (this person) will have a noble and pleasing palace . Motivated by the element of purity, after passing away from the world of gods, (this person) will go to the human being and will be named Soṇa . With diligence, determination, while striving to stay in the Dharma of the Master, (this person) will know comprehensively about all taints and will Nirvana free of taints . The Blessed One Gotama, the Noble Sakya, the one with unlimited vision, the one with all-knowing, the Great Hero will establish (this person) in the supreme position ." I have been trained in the ultimate training, my mind has been well strengthened, all duties have been laid down, I have Nirvana free of taints. The Dragon Statue of Aṅgīrasa, like a well-born lion, after sitting down in the Order of Bhikkhus established me in the supreme position. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Soṇa Koṭikaṇṇa uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Soṇakoṭikaṇṇa is the second part. –OoOoo– 43. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER KĀḶIGODHĀPUTTABHADDIYA All go to the Fully Enlightened Padumuttara, the compassionate Great Sage, the Great Leader of the whole world, All (everyone) offered cloths, including seats, food, food and water to the Master (and) at the unsurpassed Phuoc Dien. (Thinking): " I will also make offerings to the God of gods ," I invited the Supreme Buddha and also the Supreme Assembly. And encouraged by me, these people invited the Tathagata and the entire Assembly of Bhikkhus, the unsurpassed Phuoc Dien. I have prepared a golden armchair (worth) a hundred thousand, covered with wool carpets, (made) of wool, cotton, linen, and cotton, which is a seat of infinitely well-deserved value. with Buddha. The Knower of the World Padumuttara, the God of the Devas, the Man of the Ox, surrounded by the Assembly of Bhikkhus came to my door. With a pure heart, with a joyful mind, I went out to welcome the Fully Enlightened One, the famous Protector of the World, and welcomed him into my home. With a pure faith, with a joyful mind, I satisfied the Buddha, the World Leader, and a hundred thousand bhikkhus with the finest rice. The Knower of the World Padumuttara, who received the offerings, after sitting down at the Assembly of Bhikkhus uttered these verses: “ Whoever has offered this golden seat covered with woolen rugs, I will praise him. People, listen to Me . He will rule the Kingdom of Heaven seventy-four times and will enjoy success and be respected by fairies . (He) will reign over a thousand kingdoms on the earth and will become a Wheel-turning-King fifty-one times. (He) will be the one with a noble family from all the lineages. And later, motivated by the chaste factor, he will become ordained and will become the Guru's Disciple, whose name is Bhaddiya ." Attached to solitude, I have lived in a secluded place. And all the Fruitions I have attained, I now have the defilement removed. Knowing all my affairs, the All-Knowing, World Leader, after sitting down in the Order of Bhikkhus established me in the supreme position. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Bhaddiya Kāḷigodhāyaputta uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Bhaddiya Kāḷigodhāputta is the third part. –OoOoo– 44. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER SANNIṬṬHĀPAKA After making a small cupola in the forest, I live in the hills, content myself with having or not having, with having fame or without fame. The Knower of the World Padumuttara, the recipient of offerings, along with a hundred thousand capable persons went to my area. When the Great Hero named Padumuttara approached, I prepared a carpet of grass and made an offering to the Guru. With a pure mind, with a joyful mind, with a pure mind, I have offered āmaṇḍa fruit and drinking water to one who has an upright being. Ever since I gave alms a hundred thousand kalpas ago, I no longer know the realm of suffering; this is the fruit of the āmaṇḍa fruit. Forty-one kalpas ago, I was the only Arindama, the Wheel-turner, accomplished in the seven kinds of treasures, with great power. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Sanniṭṭhāpaka uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Sanniṭṭhāpaka is the fourth part. –OoOoo– 45. CHRONICLES OF ELDER PAÑCAHATTHIYA The Fully Enlightened One named Sumedha walks in the marketplace, has eyes to look down, has deliberate speech, is mindful, and has sense of restraint. (The people) brought me five bouquets of blue lotus flowers to make a wreath for my head. Having gained my faith, I personally offered it to the Buddha. And those offered flowers became the roof of the Guru, and moved after the Dragon Statue just as students follow the teacher. (Since) I have offered flowers for thirty thousand aeons, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of making offerings to the Buddha. Two thousand kalpas ago, there were five kingslayers with the same name Hatthiya, who were wheel-turning kings of great power. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. Venerable Venerable Pañcahatthiya[15] uttered these verses like that. The record of the elder Pañcahatthiya is the fifth part. –OoOoo– 46. ​​CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER PADUMACCHADANIYA When the great Protector of the World Vipassī entered Nirvana, I took the well-bloomed pink lotus and offered it to the pyre. And when the flower was presented to the pyre, it flew up into the sky. I created and maintained the canopy in the air over the pyre. (Since) I offered the flower ninety-one kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of making offerings to the Buddha. Forty-seven kalpas ago, (I was) a Wheel-turning King named Padumissara, a conqueror of the four directions, of great power. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable thera Padumacchadaniya[16] uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Padumacchadaniya is the sixth part. –OoOoo– 47. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER SAYANADĀYAKA The noble bed covered with layers of cloth was offered by me to the Blessed One Siddhattha, who had such a loving heart. The Buddha accepted a suitable seat. The Conqueror rose from his seat and rose into the air. (Since) I have offered the bed ninety-four kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of the offering of the bed. Fifty-one kalpas ago, (I was) a man named Varuṇa Deva, a Wheel-turner, accomplished in the seven kinds of treasures, of great power. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Sayanadāyaka[17] said these verses thus. The record of the elder Sayanadāyaka is the seventh part. –OoOoo– 48. CHRONICLES OF ELDER CAṄKAMADĀYAKA After collecting the bricks, I built such a passageway of the Wise One Atthadassī, the worldly Chief One. The channel is well constructed, five ratanas (1.25 meters) high, one hundred arms (50 meters) long, worthy of respect and liking. The Blessed One, the Supreme Being, Atthadass received it. He took the sand in his hand and uttered these verses: “ Because of this sand offering and this well-constructed passage, (he) will enjoy sand containing the seven kinds of treasures . (He) will rule over the heavenly kingdom in the midst of the gods for three kalpas and will enjoy success and be respected by fairies . After going to the human world, (that person) will be the king of the country. And he will become a Wheel-turning One on earth three times ." Since I did that one thousand eight hundred kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of the walking path. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Caṅkamadāyaka[18] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Caṅkamadāyaka is the eighth part. –OoOoo– 49. CHRONICLES OF ELDER SUBHADDA The One Who Knows the World, Padumuttara, who received offerings of great fame, converted the masses of people to Nirvana. And while the Fully Enlightened One was in Nirvana, the ten thousand (worlds) were shaken. At that time, there was a large crowd of people, and the gods had gathered. After offering incense along with aromatic powders and jasmine flowers, I became overjoyed. With a joyful heart, I applied it to the Supreme Being. Knowing my intention, the Guru, the Supreme Being in the world, the Fully Enlightened One, while lying down, uttered these verses: “ Whosoever has covered (My body) with perfumes and garlands at My last time, I will exalt him. People, listen to Me . Fate here, this man will go to the heaven of Dat Sut. Having ruled the kingdom in that place, he will go to the Realm of Lac Thien Hoa . Having offered the supreme noble garland in this way, being satisfied with one's own karma, he will enjoy success . This man will also be reborn in the heaven of Dat Sutta again. After the end of the world, that person (this person) will go to the human being . The son of the Sakya lineage, the great Dragon Statue in the world including the gods and the Right Eye, will help many sentient beings to enlightenment and then Nirvana . While having achieved ordination (as a Taoist), motivated by the element of purity (this person) will go to the Fully Enlightened One, and then ask the question . The All-Enlightened One, the All-Knowing, the World Leader will make (this person) happy. After fully knowing the meritorious deeds, He will reveal the (noble) Truths . And satisfied with the question, the person will be cheerful, attentive. After paying homage to the guru, (this person) will ask for ordination . That Buddha, who is well-versed in the noble Dharma, after seeing (this person) has a pure faith, is happy with his karma, will give (this person) a monkhood . After exerting himself in the Dhamma of the Perfectly Enlightened One, having thoroughly known about all the defilements, this man will attain Nirvana free of taints ." Attached to past karma, attentive, well-composed, I am the righteous son of the Buddha, born of the Dharma, well-made. After going to see the Dharma King, I asked the ultimate question. And while explaining my question, he brought me into the flow of the Dharma. After understanding His Dhamma, I lived, delighted in the Dharma. After thoroughly knowing about all piracy, I live free of contraband. One hundred thousand kalpas ago, the Leader Padumuttara entered Nirvana without clinging, like a lamp that had gone out because of the exhaustion of its fuel. There was a stupa made of jewels seven yojanas high. At that place, I offered a banner that was good in every way, pleasing to the eye. And the leading Sravaka named Tissa of Buddha Kassapa, heir to the Dharma of the Conqueror, was my biological son. Due to my poor mind, I said bad words to him. As a result of that karmic accomplishment, I saw the Conqueror at the end. In the forest of sālā Upavattana, in the last place, the Wise One, the Great Hero, the Conqueror, the one with benefit and compassion, gave (me) ordination. Now, right today is the ordination, right today is the practice to the higher level, right today is the Perfection of Nirvana in the presence of the Supreme Being. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Subhadda uttered these verses thus.] The record of the elder Subhadda is the ninth part. –OoOoo– 50. CHRONICLES OF ELDER CUNDA Having made such a pillar for the Exalted One, Siddhattha, the worldly Chief One, I covered it with jasmine flowers. When I finished, I brought the flower close to the Buddha. I took the rest of the flower and offered it to the Buddha. Buddha, the great Leader of the world looks like a golden pillar. With a pure heart, with a joyful mind, I presented the flower pillar to him. The Fully Enlightened One, whose doubts have been eliminated, accompanied by those who have passed through the streams, after sitting down in the Order of Bhikkhus uttered these verses: “ Whoever has offered to Me the pillar of flower that is emitting the scent of heaven, I will praise him. People, listen to Me . Ending here, this man will go to the world of the gods, (and will) be respected by the assembly of gods, surrounded by jasmine flowers . Born of meritorious kamma, having a lofty abode made of gold and jade mani, a palace will be revealed to him . He will rule the heavenly kingdom for seventy-four kalpas and will enjoy success and be respected by fairies . (He) will reign over the land kingdom of the earth three hundred times, and will become the Wheel-turning-King seventy-five times . (He) will become the ruler of mankind named Dujjaya. Relying on his own karma, (he) will enjoy that blessing . (He) will not go to the lower realms and will go to the human being. And no less than one hundred koṭi (one billion) of gold will be accumulated (for him) . He will be born in the Brahmin lineage and will be the intelligent and beloved biological son of Vaṅganta and Madame Sārī . And later on, he will become ordained in the Dhamma of Aṅgīrasa (Buddha Gotama) and will become the Discourse of the Master named Cūlacunda . He or she will become a person with contraband or be terminated as soon as he is a novice. Having thoroughly known about all defilements, he will attain Nirvana free of taints .” I have served the Great Hero and many other sages, and I have served my brother for the ultimate goal. I have served my brother,[19] I have placed the reliquary (of my brother) in the bowl and presented it to the Perfectly Enlightened One, the Chief Elder of the world, the Human Bull. The Buddha in the world also took it with both hands, and while displaying the relic he extolled the foremost Sravaka. My mind has been skillfully liberated, my faith has been established. After thoroughly knowing about all piracy, I live free of contraband. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―(as above)― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Cunda said these verses like that.
