Saint Chronicles I – Subhti . Chapter.1=1.VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH. HOLY PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS SUBHTI PRODUCTS 21. CHRONICLES OF ELDER SUBHTI Not far from the Himalayas, there is a mountain called Nisabha, there is my well-built hermitage, and there is a well-built large house of leaves. At that time, as the braided-haired ascetic of the highest austerity named Kosiya, I lived in (mountain) Nisabha, alone without a second person. At that time, I did not use the fruit, the roots, and the leaves (still on the tree). Meanwhile, I live off the yellowing leaves that have fallen. Even while giving up my life, I don't spoil the life's sustenance. I make my mind happy, I stay away from wrong pursuits (in raising my life). Whenever citta related to craving arises in me, I examine it myself. When I was attentive, I tamed that craving, saying: “ You are attached to the seductive, angry at the unpleasant, and deluded by the enticing, get yourself out of the forest . This residence is for the ascetic ascetics who have been purified, no longer tainted. Don't spoil the purity, get yourself out of the forest . (If) you become a layperson, you will always bear the bondage. Don't be confused about two things (left home and home), you should get out of the forest by yourself . Just as the firewood for burning a corpse is not an object to be used for work anywhere else, whether in the village or in the jungle, because it is no longer considered firewood . Just like the kind of wood that burns a corpse, you are no longer a layperson and you are not a monk. Today you are the one who no longer belongs to both classes, you must get out of the forest by yourself . If this happens to you, who knows this about you? If you forsake your duty of faith, there will be much laziness in you . The wise will hate you just as city dwellers hate pollution. The hermits will banish and always rebuke you . The wise will criticize you for breaking the precepts. Even without attaining cohabitation, how can you live? The elephant with the power to approach and drive away the elephant is a mātaṅga (of age) abstinent in three places, sixty years old, out of the herd . While being separated from the herd, the elephant has no security, no comfort. It suffers, the mind is disturbed. While upset, it is agitated . In the same way, braided-haired ascetics will also banish you as evil-minded. While separated from them, you will not achieve peace, comfort . Invaded by the arrow of sorrow, you are burned with anger whether by day or by night, like an elephant separated from its herd . Just as metallic gold never causes the hammer to be burned anywhere, so with renunciation of precepts you will not cause (afflictions) to be burned anywhere . Even if you live at home, how will you live? The property that belongs to the mother as well as to the father left for you is nonexistent . While doing the work that causes sweat to flow from your body, you will live at home like that. It is good that it is not to your liking .” In that place, I prevent the mind from being inclined to be polluted in such a way. After giving explanations with various dharmas, I was able to stop evil thoughts. Thus, while I was resting with abiding in non-distraction, thirty thousand years had passed while I was in the forest. After seeing (I am) the seeker of the ultimate goal delighting in undistractedness, the Fully Enlightened Padumuttara went to see me. Being immeasurable, with no equivalent, having the color (golden) aura of the timbarūsaka fruit , unmatched in stature, then the Buddha walked in the air. Just as the sālā tree was in full bloom, like lightning in the middle of a cloud in the sky, so the Buddha was unmatched in wisdom when he walked in the air. Just as the lion king was not afraid, like the proud king elephant, like the shining tiger king, (the Buddha) then walked walking in the air. Having the bright yellow aura of gold coins, like the embers of khadira wood , like the wish-fulfilling jewel of mani, (the Buddha) then walked walking in the air. With the pure light of Mount Kelāsa , like the moon on a full moon day, like the sun at noon, (the Buddha) then went walking in the air. After seeing him walking in the air, then I thought like this: " Is this being a heavenly person, or is this a human being? People like this on earth we have never heard or seen. There is also a spell (about appearance), this person will be a guru ." After thinking like that, I made my mind pure. At that time I gathered many kinds of flowers and fragrant things. Having prepared a seat with flowers, I said to the well-intentioned, pleasing one, the chief among the tamers of humanity, these words: “ Bai Dai Hung, this seat that I have prepared is suitable for you. While making my mind happy, please sit down on the flower seat ." The Blessed One sat down there, like a lion without fear. The Buddha sat on the seat of the noble flower for seven days and nights. While worshiping (Him), I stood for seven days and nights. The Master, the Supreme Being in the world has come out of meditation. While praising my work, His Holiness said these words: “ You should cultivate the remembrance of the Buddha as the unsurpassed (dhamma) of practices . After practicing this mindfulness, you will have full mind and will be happy in the world of the gods for thirty thousand kalpas . You will be the Lord of the Gods who will rule over the Heavenly Kingdom eighty times. You will become the Wheel-turning King in the kingdom a thousand times . The kingdom's territory was vast, and could not be measured in terms of numbers. You will enjoy all these things; this is the fruit of remembrance of the Buddha . While reincarnating in this world, you will gain great wealth, there will be no shortage of wealth; this is the fruit of remembrance of the Buddha . In a hundred thousand kalpas (later), a Master named Gotama, of the lineage, of the Okkāka clan, will appear in the world . Having renounced eighty koṭi (eight hundred million), many slaves and laborers, you will become ordained in the Dhamma of the Blessed One Gotama . After pleasing the noble Sakya-sama Gotama, you will become the Guru's Sravaka called Subhūti . Having sat down in the Assembly of Bhikkhus, (that Buddha) will establish you in the supreme position in terms of having the virtue worthy of offerings and likewise in terms of remaining in infatuation. .” Having said this, the Fully Enlightened One named Padumuttara, the Wise One ascended into the air like a king swan in the sky. Taught by the Protector of the World, I paid homage to the Tathagata. Delighted, I always practice recollection of the Buddha, the supreme dharma. Because that kamma was well done and due to the aspirational powers of volition, after relinquishing the human body, I went to the Dao Loi heaven. I have been the Lord of the Gods ruling over the Heavenly Kingdom eighty times. And I have been a Wheel-turner a thousand times. The kingdom's territory was vast, and could not be measured in terms of numbers. I enjoy good achievements; this is the fruit of remembrance of the Buddha. While reincarnating in this world, I gain great wealth, I have no shortage of wealth; this is the fruit of remembrance of the Buddha. Since I did that one hundred thousand kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of remembrance of the Buddha. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―(as above)― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Subhti uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Subhūti is the first part. –OoOoo– 22. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER UPAVĀNA The Conqueror named Padumuttara is the master of all dharmas. After igniting like a mass of fire, the Perfectly Enlightened One attained Nirvana. Crowds of people came together and made offerings to the Tathagata. After completing the well-executed cremation pyre, they lifted the body. After performing their duties with the body, they gathered the relics in that place. All of them including gods and humans built the stupa dedicated to the Buddha. The first layer is made of gold, the second layer is made of jade, the third layer is made of silver, and the fourth layer is made of crystal. Similarly, the rim of the fifth floor was made of rubies, the sixth floor was made of precious stones, and the upper part was made of all kinds of jewels. The lower part is made of jade mani, the platform is made of jewels. Made entirely of gold, the stupa rises to a height of one do-week. At that time, the gods gathered in that place and discussed together: " We will also build a stupa for the Protector of the World . The relics do not have discrete pieces, (the relics) the body is fused into one block. We will make the cover at this stupa dedicated to the Buddha .” With the seven kinds of jewels, the gods added another do-week. Having a height of two yojanas, that stupa dispels darkness. At that time, dragons gathered in that place and discussed together: " Humans and also gods, they built a stupa for the Buddha. The world and the gods are not distracted, we should not be distracted. We will also build a stupa for the Protector of the World .” Having gathered together, the dragons covered with wish-fulfilling jade, sapphire, and jade mani came to the throne of the Buddha's stupa. Now, the shrine for the Buddha was made entirely of jade mani, then three yojanas in height, which was the source of light. At that time, the human birds gathered and discussed together: " Humans, gods, and dragons, they built a stupa dedicated to the Buddha. The world and the gods are not distracted, we should not be distracted. We will also build a stupa for the Protector of the World .” The human bird has made at the stupa an additional cover entirely made of jade mani. They also made the Buddha's throne room grow by one do-week. With a height of four yojanas, the stupa of the Buddha shines and makes all directions radiant as the sun has risen. At that time, the evil gods gathered and discussed together: " Human beings, including gods, dragons, and human birds are similar . They built a first-class stupa dedicated to the supreme Buddha specifically. The world and the gods are not distracted, we should not be distracted . We will also build a stupa for the Protector of the World. With all kinds of jewels, we will cover the throne of the Buddha's palace to make it taller ." The evil spirits also made the Buddha's throne room grow by one do-week. Then, with a height of five yojanas, the stupa was resplendent. We will also build a stupa for the Protector of the World. With crystal gems, we will cover the throne of the Buddha's sanctuary to make it taller ." The yaksha species also made the Buddha's throne room grow by one do-week. Then, with a height of six yojanas, the stupa was resplendent. At that time, the gandharvas gathered together and discussed together, saying: "It is the same with humans, gods, dragons, evil spirits, and human birds . All have built the stupa for the Buddha. In this we are the ones who have done nothing. We will also build a stupa for the Protector of the World. ” After having made seven layers, the Kanthāgatas placed them on the parasol. At that time, the Kanthāgatas built a stupa entirely made of gold. Then, with a height of seven yojanas, the stupa was resplendent. Night and day are indistinguishable, (because) light is always present. The moon, the sun, even the stars are no better than the light of the stupa. Even the light was not lit around a hundred do-weeks. At that time, those who made offerings to the stupa did not step on the stupa, but they threw it in the air. Appointed by the gods, the yaksha named Abhisammata (on duty) drapes a banner or wreath above it. Those people did not see the yaksha, but saw the wreath carried by it. Having seen this and then gone, all of them go to a good rebirth. Those who do not have faith in the Buddha's teaching and who have gained faith in the Dharma have a wish to see miracles, they make offerings to the stupa. At that time, I was an employee in the city of Hamsavatī. After seeing the people rejoice, then I thought like this: “ For someone who has such a reliquary, he must be the noble World-Honored One. And this crowd of people was showing a state of fervor enthusiastically . I will also show respect to the Protector of the World in the same way, I will become the heir of his (Buddha) Dharma in the future. ” There is a top robe that has been well washed by the laundress, I have hung it on the top of the bamboo and raised the pennant in the air. The Abhisammata yakka took my banner and raised it in the air. After seeing the pennant waving in the wind, I was filled with joy. There, after making my mind pure and confident, I approached the recluse. After paying homage to that monk, I asked about the achievement of the pennant. He explained to me the arising of my joy and rapture: “ You will always enjoy the fruit of that banner's accomplishment . The elephants, the horses, the chariots, the soldiers, and the army of the four branches will always accompany you; this is the fruit of the offering of the pennant . Sixty thousand musical instruments and large adorned drums will often accompany you; this is the fruit of the offering of the pennant . There were 86,000 women decorated, adorned with colorful fabrics, and studded with pearls and pearls. With curled eyelashes, a smile, extremely feminine, with a slim waist, they will often surround you; this is the fruit of the offering of the pennant . You will be happy in the world of the gods for 30,000 kalpas. You will be the Lord of the Gods who will rule over the Heavenly Kingdom eighty times. And you will be the King of Wheels a thousand times . The kingdom's territory is vast, it cannot be measured by counting . In a hundred thousand kalpas (later), a Master named Gotama, of the lineage, of the Okkāka clan, will appear in the world . After your death in the world of gods, motivated by the element of purity, associated with good karma, you will be a relative of Brahma (Brahmin lineage). Having renounced 80 koṭi (eight hundred million), many slaves and laborers, you will be ordained in the Dhamma of the Blessed One Gotama . Having satisfied the noble Sakya-sama Gotama, you will be the Guru's Sravaka, whose name is Upavāna. ” The work done in one hundred thousand kalpas has allowed me to see the fruit here. Like the speed of a well-shot arrow, I have burned through my afflictions. While I am the Rotary King lord of the four continents, the flags are always raised around (me) three do-weeks. Since I performed the deed 100,000 kalpas ago, I have not known suffering; this is the fruit of the offering of the pennant. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Upavāna uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Upavāna is the second part. –OoOoo— 23. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER SARAṆAGAMANIYA At that time, I was a servant to my mother in the city of Candavatī. My mother and father are blind, I take care of them. At that time, I went to a secluded place and sat down, I thought like this: " While taking care of my mother and father, I did not achieve ordination. Covered by that darkness, (beings) are burned by the three kinds of fire (greed, hatred, and delusion). When such fear has arisen, no one is a guide. The Buddha has appeared in the world, the Dharma of the Conqueror shines forth. For people with good karma, they can help themselves. I have learned about the three refuges and have kept them whole. Because that kamma was well done, I was freed from suffering. The ascetic named Nisabha was the foremost Disciple of the Buddha. I went to see him and received the refuge (upholding the Three Refuges). Until then, the life span was known to be one hundred thousand years. I've kept going to refuge for all this time. As I was at the end, I remembered that refuge. Since that karma was well done, I went to the Dao Loi heaven. Having reached the world of devas, accomplished in meritorious karma, wherever I go I obtain the eight seeds: I am glorified in every direction, I have sharp wisdom, all the gods are obedient, I have obtained immeasurable wealth. I have a bright yellow skin, I am loved everywhere, I am loyal to my friends, my fame is supreme. I have been the Lord of the Gods ruling over the Heavenly Kingdom eighty times. I have enjoyed the bliss of heaven and have been respected by fairies. And I became a Wheel-turner seventy-five times. The kingdom's territory was vast, and could not be measured in terms of numbers. When I reached the end of life, accomplished in meritorious deeds, I was born in an extremely luxurious house in the city of Sāvatthī. Accompanied by the children, I left the city. Having fun and laughter, I went to the monastery for the Congregation. At that place, I saw a recluse who was liberated, without the seed of rebirth. He preached the Dharma to me and gave me refuge. After hearing about the refuge, I here remembered my recourse. I sat in that very seat and attained arahantship. At the age of seven from my birth, I attained the status of an arahant. Realizing (my) virtue, the Fully Enlightened One, the One with the Right Eye, has allowed (me) to cultivate to a higher level. I went to the refuges in the past countless eons. Therefore, the skillful karma done by me has allowed me to see the fruit here. My refuge has been carefully preserved, and my mind has been well strengthened. After enjoying all the fame, I have reached the state of Immovable. Those of you who are listening, please listen to me. I will teach you about the path I have seen for myself. “ The Buddha has arisen in the world, the Dharma of the Conqueror is brought into being. The sound of the Immortal Drum being struck is the banishment of the arrows of sorrow . By your own strength you can perform upward action in the unsurpassed Phuoc Dien, likewise, (with your power) you will reach Nirvana . Having received the three refuges, having kept the five precepts, having made the mind pure in the Buddha, they will proceed to the end of suffering . After practicing the same way as I did, after fully observing the precepts, it won't be long before all of you will also attain the status of arahant ." Having acquired the three insights, I have attained supernatural powers, and have gained insight into the minds of others. Bach Dai Hung, His Sacred Manifesto bows down at the feet of the Master. (Since) I went to take refuge in the Buddha countless eons ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of going to refuge. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Tisaraṇagamaniya said these verses thus. The record of the elder Tisaraṇagamaniya is the third part. –OoOoo– 24. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER PAÑCASĪLASAMĀDĀNIYA At that time, I was an employee in the city of Candavatī. Being entangled in taking care of other people's affairs, I failed to attain ordination. (I was thinking): " Closed by that darkness, (beings) are burned by the three kinds of fire (greed, hate, and delusion), then by what method can we be liberated? ? And I am a wretched laborer, and I do not have a worthy offering. Or should we uphold and fulfill the five precepts? ” The Discourse of the sage Anomadassī was called Nisabha. I went to see him and received the five lessons (about precepts). Until then, the life span was known to be one hundred thousand years. I have kept the five precepts completely for all this time. When the time of death came, the gods comforted me, saying: " Sir, there is a chariot to win a thousand (horses) for you, it has come ." When the last citta was progressing, I remembered my morality. Since that karma was well done, I went to the Dao Loi heaven. And I have been the Lord of the Gods who rules over the Heavenly Kingdom thirty times. I have enjoyed the bliss of heaven and have been respected by fairies. I have become a Wheel-turner seventy-five times. The kingdom's territory was vast, and could not be measured in terms of numbers. Motivated by the element of purity, after dying from the world of the gods, I was born in an extremely luxurious house in Vesālī city. At the time approaching the rainy season, while the Dharma of the Conqueror was shining brightly, my mother and also my father received five lessons (about precepts). Due to listening, I quickly recalled my morality. I sat in that very seat and attained arahantship. By the time I was five years old from birth, I had attained the status of an arahant. After realizing (my) virtue, the Buddha, the One with Right Eye, allowed (me) to cultivate to a higher level. Having kept the five precepts perfectly, in countless previous lives I did not go to the lower realms. Due to the influence of these precepts, I have enjoyed fame. While praising (about the fruit of precepts) even for one koṭi (ten million) kalpas, I can only praise a small part. After observing the five precepts, I obtained the three seeds: I am a person of long life, great wealth, and sharp wisdom. I am just praising the extra part of the whole (treasure) as far as humanity is concerned. After reincarnating in this world, I have all these things. The Conqueror's Sravaka is one who is practicing the precepts of innumerable precepts, if he delights in the rebirths, what will be the result of his accomplishment? The five precepts have been well practiced by me as an observant worker. Thanks to that virtue, today I have freed all ties. (Since) I have kept the five precepts immeasurable eons ago, I no longer know the realm of suffering; this is the fruit of the five precepts. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six transcendental wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Pañcasīlasamādāniya[5] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Pañcasīlasamādāniya is the fourth part. –OoOoo– 25. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER ANNASAṂSĀVAKA The Fully Enlightened One (Siddhattha) has a bright yellow skin, like a golden pillar, has thirty-two good marks, is walking in the market place. After seeing the Light of the world Siddhattha, the immeasurable, the Light, the trained, I attained supreme rapture. After inviting the Perfectly Enlightened One, I took care of the meal for that Great Sage. At that time, the Great Compassionate Protector spoke a word of rejoicing to me. Having made my mind pure and confident in the Buddha, in that Great Compassionate One who is the creator of the highest consolation, I was happy in the heavens for one kalpa. Since I have made almsgiving ninety-four kalpas ago, I have no longer known suffering; this is the fruit of the actual offering. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six transcendental wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. Since I have offered smoke and incense ninety-four kalpas ago, I have no longer known suffering; this is the fruit of the offering of incense. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six transcendental wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER UTTARIYA At that time, I was a crocodile on the bank of the Candabhāgā river. Sticking with my feeding ground, I went to the river's wharf. At that time, the Autonomous Siddhattha, that great being, intended to cross the river, so he went towards the river's wharf. And when the Perfectly Enlightened One approached, I also drew near to that place. I have come close to the Perfectly Enlightened One and uttered these words: “ Great Hero, please come up (on your back), I will take you to (the river) the territory that belongs to me handed down by my ancestors. O Great Sage, please have mercy (to me) ." Hearing my cry, the Great Sage has ascended (on his back). Rejoice, with a joyful heart I brought the Leader of the World over (river). On the other side of the river, there the World Leader Siddhattha comforted me, saying, " You will attain Immortality ." After I died and left that body, I went to the world of gods. I have enjoyed the bliss of heaven and have been respected by fairies. And I was the Lord of the Gods who ruled over the Heavenly Kingdom seven times. I have become the Rotary King lord of the earth three times. Attached to solitude, prudence, and skillful restraint, I maintained my last life in the Dharma of the Fully Enlightened One.
