CHRONICLES OF ELDER SOBHITA The Conqueror named Padumuttara, the Most High of the world, the One who preached the Immortal status to a great crowd. After listening to His words, I burst into words. Then I put my hands together and was attentive. “ Just as the sea is the foremost among the sources of water, so the rock of Neru is noble among the mountains, so also those who exercise the power of their mind do not attain a partial wisdom. of the Buddha ." Having prescribed the course in the Dhamma, the Buddha, the Compassionate, the Hermit, sat down at the Assembly of Bhikkhus and uttered these verses: “ Whoever has praised the wisdom of the Buddha, the World Leader, will not go to a miserable state for a hundred thousand kalpas . (He) will burn away the afflictions, be attentive, well concentrated, will become the Guru's Discourse, with the name Sobhita ." (Previously) fifty thousand kalpas, seven (same) names as Yasuggata were Wheel-turning Kings who had accomplished the seven kinds of treasures and possessed great power. My afflictions have been burned away, all beings have been erased, the three wisdoms have been attained, I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Elder Sobhita uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Sobhita is the first part. –OoOoo– 132. CHRONICLES OF ELDER SUDASSANA On the banks of the river Vitatthā, the pilakkha tree bore fruit. While searching for that plant, I saw the Leader of the World. After seeing the ketaka tree in full bloom, I then cut the flower stalk and offered it to the Buddha Sikhī, the relative of the world. " Supreme Buddha, great sage, with what wisdom you have attained the status of immortality, I offer that wisdom ." After offering wisdom, I saw the pilakkha tree , I attained that wisdom; this is the fruit of the offering of wisdom. (Since) I offered the flower thirty-one kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of the offering of wisdom. Thirteen kalpas ago, twelve (with the same) name Phaluggata were the Wheel-turning Kings who had accomplished the seven kinds of treasures and possessed great power. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Elder Sudassana said these verses like that. The record of the elder Sudassana is the second part. –OoOoo– 133. CHRONICLES OF ELDER CANDANAPŪJAKA At that time, I was a golden-snail bird on the bank of the Candabhāgā river. And I had the food of the flower, likewise there was the dress of the flower. And the Blessed One, Atthadass, the worldly Chief, the Human Bull, went out at the top of the forest, like a king swan in the sky. “ White Superman, I salute Thee! His mind is skillfully purified. He has a calm face and eyes, a clear face and senses .” The Wise One with immense wisdom has descended from the sky. He spread out his double robe and sat down in the full lotus position. I took the dissolved frankincense and went near the Conqueror. With pure faith, with joy in mind, I offered it to the Buddha. After paying homage to the All-Enlightened One, the World's Most High, the Human Bull, having given rise to excitement, I went away, facing north. (Since) I have offered frankincense (before) one thousand eight hundred kalpas, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of making offerings to the Buddha. In the past, one thousand four hundred kalpas ago, these three (with the same name) Rohita were the Wheel-turning Kings of great power. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Candanapūjaka [10] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Candanapūjaka is the third part. (Eighth chant). –OoOoo– 134. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER PUPPHACHADANIYA As a teacher, attached to the offering, the brahmin well-versed in spells named Sunanda made an offering for the dedication ceremony. At that time, the Knower of the World Padumuttara, the Noble One, the Compassionate One, the Hermit, while thinking of the people, went on walking meditation in the air. After walking, the All-Enlightened One, the All-Knowing, the World Leader, who had no seed of rebirth, spread his loving-kindness to all sentient beings without limit. Having cut the flowers at the stalks, the brahmin, proficient in spells, summoned all his disciples and threw them into the air. At that time, by the power of the Buddha, the canopy of flowers spread over the whole city and did not disappear for seven days. Because of that pure factor, I have enjoyed success. After thoroughly knowing all the defilements, I have overcome worldly attachment. (Previously) 1,100 kalpas, thirty-five king-slayers with the (same) name Ambaraṃsa were Wheel-turning Kings of great power. xxxx. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. Venerable Venerable Pupphachadaniya[11] uttered these verses like that. The record of the elder Pupphachadaniya is the fourth part. –OoOoo– 135. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER RAHOSAÑÑAKA Not far from the Himalayas there is a mountain called Vasabha. At the foot of that mountain a hermitage has been established. At that time, as a Brahmin, I taught three thousand students. After summoning those disciples, I sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, being a brahmin well versed in mantras, while searching for the Buddha's understanding, I made my mind to be calm in (his) wisdom. There, after making my mind calm, I sat down on a carpet of leaves. After being placed in the full lotus position, I ended up living there. Since I attained that contemplation thirty-one kalpas ago, I have known no suffering; this is the fruit of wisdom contemplation. (Formerly) twenty-seven kalpas, I was king Siridhara, a Wheel-turner, accomplished in the seven kinds of treasures, of great power. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Rahosaññaka[12] uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Rahosaññaka is the fifth part. –OoOoo– 136. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER CAMPAKAPUPPHIYA (Buddha) sitting in the hills was like a burning kaṇikāra tree , causing all directions to glow like an osadhī star . There were three well-educated young men in their profession with bags of supplies and followed me behind. There were seven flowers that had fallen in the basket because of the heat. I have taken those flowers and have offered (directed mind to) the wisdom of Vessabhū. (Since) I offered the flower thirty-one kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of the offering of wisdom. Twenty-nine kalpas ago, (I was) a man named Vipulābha, a Wheel-turner, accomplished in the seven kinds of treasures, of great power. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. Venerable Venerable Campakapupphiya[13] uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Campakapupphiya is the sixth part. –OoOoo– 137. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER ATTHASANDASSAKA I saw the Leader of the World, one who had or had no gonorrhea, one who had attained power, sitting in a large clearing surrounded by the Order of Bhikkhus. “ One hundred thousand people with three intelligences, six superior knowledge, and great divine power surrounding the Perfectly Enlightened One, who is it that sees but does not have faith? In (the world) including the gods, whose wisdom equivalent is not found, who is the one who sees the Perfectly Enlightened One with boundless wisdom but does not have faith? And one cannot harm the dharmakaya which is illuminating (like) the entire pearl mine, who is it who sees (him) without having faith? ” With these three verses, the Nārada Saragacchiya praised the Undefeatable One, Padumuttara. Because of that purity of mind in my heart and due to the praise of the Buddha, I did not go to a miserable state for a hundred thousand kalpas. Three thousand kalpas ago, (I was) a kingslayer named Sumitta, a Wheel-turner, accomplished in the seven kinds of treasures, with great power. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Venerable Atthasandassaka[14] uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Atthasandassaka is the seventh part. –OoOoo– 138. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER EKAPASĀDANIYA My name is Nārada, people know me as (lineage) Kesava. While learning about the good and the bad, I came close to the Buddha. While consoling sentient beings, the Great Sage Atthadassī, the Compassionate One with loving-kindness, the Right Eye preached the Dharma. After having made my mind pure, I clasped my hands at the top. After paying homage to the Guru, I departed, facing east. (Formerly) one thousand seven hundred kalpas, I was the king and lord of the earth, a wheel-turner named Amittatāpana of great power. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Elder Ekapasādaniya[15] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Ekapasādaniya is the eighth part. –OoOoo– 139. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER SĀLAPUPPHADĀYAKA At that time, I was already the king of beasts, the noble born lion. While searching for the treacherous spot in the mountain, I saw the Leader of the World. “ This must be the Great Hero, the one who helped the masses of people to attain (liberation) Nirvana. Or should we serve the God of the Gods, the Man and the Bull? ” Having broken the branch of the sālā tree , I brought back the flower with its covering. I have come close to the Perfectly Enlightened One and have offered the supreme flower. (Since) I offered the flower ninety-one kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of the flower offering. And before in the ninth incarnation, three kings named Virocana were Wheel-turning Kings of great power. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Venerable Sālapupphadāyaka[16] uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Sālapupphadāyaka is the ninth part. –OoOoo– 140. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER PIYĀLAPHALADĀYAKA At that time, I was a butcher, a murderer of other lives. I slept on the side of a mountain not far from the Sikh Guru. I see the Buddha, the great Leader of the world, by night and by day. But I do not have anything worthy of offering to the Sovereign of men. I took the piyāla fruit and went close to the Buddha. The World-Honored One, the World-Honored One, the Human Niu, received it. Since then I have served the Scout. With that faith in my heart, I ended up living there. (Since) I have offered fruit thirty-one kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of the fruit offering. Fifteen kalpas ago, the three (names) Piyālī were Wheel-turning Kings, accomplished in the seven kinds of treasures, with great power. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable thera Piyālaphaladāyaka[17] thus uttered these verses. The record of the elder Piyālaphaladāyaka is the tenth part. –OoOoo– SUMMARY The Sobhita, the Sudassana, the (offering) incense, the flower-covered (the offering), the contemplative of a secluded place, the campaka flower , along with the one who teaches about the goal, the one who has once pure faith, the sālā flower offering , and the tenth fruit offering; (total) there are seventy-two verses that have been counted by the wise.
