CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER VIDHŪPANADĀYAKA The fan was offered by me to the Buddha Padumuttara, such a worldly Chief, such a Sovereign of men. After having made my mind pure, I put my hands together. I paid homage to the Fully Enlightened One and left, facing north. Having taken hold of the fan, the worldly Supreme Master, while standing in the place of the Assembly of Bhikkhus, uttered this verse: " By the offering of this fan and by the vows of the mind, (he) does not fall into the lower realms for a hundred thousand kalpas ." Being diligent, determined, and calm are the qualities of the mind, and by the time I was seven years old from birth, I attained the rank of Arahant. CHRONICLES OF ELDER SATARAṂSIKA After climbing the high rock, the Supreme Being sat down. I am a brahmin well versed in mantras (dwelling) not far from the mountain. When the Great Hero, the God of the gods and the human being, sat down, I folded my hands and praised the World Leader saying: “ This is the Buddha, the Great Hero, the expounder of the noble Dharma, the head of the Order of Bhikkhus, shining like a bonfire . Just as the ocean is unwavering, like the sea that is difficult to cross, so the One who preaches the Dhamma is like the (lion) king of animals who is not afraid .” Knowing my intention, the Leader Padumuttara, standing in the place of the Assembly of Bhikkhus, uttered these verses: “ This joining of hands has been offered and by whom the supreme Buddha has been praised, (that person) will rule over the heavenly kingdom thirty thousand kalpas . Until one hundred thousand kalpas (later), the Fully Enlightened One named Aṅgīrasa, who has abandoned sins, will appear . (That person) will be the heir to that (Buddha)'s Dharma, the orthodox, created from the Dhamma, the Arahant with the name Sataraṃsī ." At the age of seven from my birth, I left home into the family life. I have radiating light, (hence) my name is Sataraṃsī (hundred rays of light). At the roof or at the base of a tree, I am a person with a certificate of meditation, enjoying meditation. I maintain my last life in the Dharma of the Fully Enlightened One. CHRONICLES OF ELDER GANDHODAKIYA There was a festival at the Mahabodhi tree of Padumuttara Buddha. I brought a decorated gourd and I offered scented water. At the time of watering the Bodhi tree, there was a big cloud that poured rain. And there was a loud noise while the thunder was breaking. I died in that place (and was reborn) like the speed of that lightning. While standing in the world of the gods, I uttered this verse: “ Oh Buddha! Oh Dharma! O achievement of our Guru! (When) my body falls, I rejoice in the world of the gods .” My abode is high, there are a hundred floors raised, there are a hundred thousand young girls always surrounding me. My sicknesses are not known, my sorrow is not there, I see no anger; this is the fruit of good karma. The one named Devala, the foremost Sravaka of the Master, the heir of the noble Dharma, came to see me (saying): “ The Blessed One used only his bowl and essentials, a thoroughbred horse is not suitable. Knowing your intentions, the Right Eye has consented ." Having given the appraiser the wind-speeded Sindhu horse as a means of swift transport, I offered the appropriate items to the Buddha Padumuttara. Wherever I go to be reborn, whether I am a God or a human being, there are horses with the speed of the wind, worthy of taming, adorned, (have) been born for me. Likewise, this portion of food has been sown by you in a fertile field, and while you are born in the realm of existence, the precious fruit will please you ." Having said this, having praised the food, the Fully Enlightened One named Padumuttara departed, facing north. Wherever I go to be reborn, whether I am a celestial or a human being, there are people holding torches in the air; this is the fruit of the offering of lamps. I experienced visions around a hundred do-weeks, after having passed through the wall, through the rock, and the mountain. The Knower of the World Padumuttara, the recipient of offerings, standing in the place of the Assembly of Bhikkhus uttered these verses: “ Due to both this offering of the banner and this service, one does not go to a miserable state for a hundred thousand kalpas . (He) will enjoy the heavenly splendor not infrequently among the gods, will be the king of the land hundreds of times, and will become the Wheel-turning-King named Uggata . Motivated by the pure factor, after enjoying attainment (one) will delight in the Dhamma of the Blessed One Gotama .” Having the determination of effort, being at peace, free from the seed of rebirth, I maintain my last life in the Dharma of the Fully Enlightened One. Having the affirmation of effort, being at peace, free from the germ of rebirth, after fully knowing all the taints, one will attain Nirvana without any taints ." I was attached to solitude, was peaceful, no longer had the seed of rebirth. After breaking the bondage as a male elephant (untied), I lived free of lust. Since I planted the Bodhi tree ninety-two kalpas ago, I no longer know the state of suffering; this is the fruit of planting the Bodhi tree. Seventy-four lives ago, (I was) known as Daṇḍasena.
