CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER SĪHĀSANADĀYAKA (At that time) the Protector of the World, the Supreme Being, Siddhattha, had entered Nirvana, the Buddha's Speech was spread, and the Dhamma was understood by many people. With a pure mind, with a joyful mind, I performed the lion zazen. After I finished the lion chair, I made the footrest. And when it rained at the lion throne, I built a house there. Because of that faith in my heart, I was reborn in the Dau Tat heaven. Immediately there was a well-constructed palace for me twenty-four yojanas long and fourteen yojanas wide. There are a hundred thousand young women who always surround me. And there is a cleverly revealed golden armchair in the castle. The means of transport by elephants, vehicles of horses, vehicles of heaven are available. Castles and even palanquins were born as desired. There were armchairs made of jade and many others made of wood cores, all of which were born to me; this is the treasure of the lion throne. I stepped on shoes made of gold, made of silver, made of crystal and jade; This is the fruit of the footstool. Since I have done that work ninety-four kalpas ago, I have no longer known suffering; this is the fruit of good karma. Seventy-three kalpas ago, there were three times as a Wheel-turning King named Inda. Seventy-two kalpas ago, there were three times as a Wheel-turning King named Sumana. Exactly seventy kalpas ago, there were three times as a Wheel-turning King named Varuṇa, accomplished with seven kinds of treasures, and lord of the four continents. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―(nt)― practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Sīhāsanadāyaka[2] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Sīhāsanadāyaka is the first part. –OoOoo– 12. CHRONICLES OF ELDER EKATTHAMBHIKA The Buddha Siddhattha had a large assembly of lay people. Those people went to take refuge in the Buddha, they put their faith in the Tathagata. All gathered, discussed, and built a hall for the Guru. Without a pillar, they searched the vast forest. At that time, I saw them in the forest and went near the crowd. After putting my hands together, I asked the crowd. When asked by me, those virtuous lay people replied, " We intend to build the hall, but we don't have a pillar ." “ Give it to me, I will offer to the Guru a pillar. I'll bring the pillar, you don't have to worry ." They examined my pillar, and were trusted with gladness. Then they came back and went to their own house. At that time, when the lay crowd had not long left, I made an offering of the pillar. I became rejoicing, with a rejoicing mind I erected the first pillar. Because of that faith in my heart, I was reborn in heaven. There is a tall palace for me, a hundred stories high. At that time, I was always served by servants while the big drums were pounding. (Formerly) fifty-five kalpas, I was king Yasodhara. In that place, for me, there was also a palace that was raised a hundred stories high, was adjacent to a noble pointed roof, and had a pleasant pillar. (Formerly) twenty-one kalpas, (I was) the Ksdhartha named Udena. In that place, there was also a palace that was raised one hundred stories high for me. Wherever I go to be reborn, whether I am a divine person or a human being, I enjoy all kinds of happiness; this is the fruit of a pillar. Ever since I had offered the pillar ninety-four kalpas ago, I no longer knew the realm of suffering; this is the fruit of a pillar. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Ekatthambhika[3] said these verses like that. The record of the elder Ekatthambhika is the second part. –OoOoo– 13. CHRONICLES OF ELDER NANDA Such a linen cloth was offered by me to the Blessed One, Padumuttara, the Sovereign, the Great Hermit, the Supreme Being of the world. The Buddha named Padumuttara made a vow to me, saying: " With the offering of this cloth, you will have a brilliant golden skin color . Motivated by pure factors, after enjoying the two attainments (heaven and human), you will become the younger brother of the Blessed One Gotama . As one who is passionate about sensual pleasures, inclined to pleasure, clinging to indulgence in sensual pleasures, then motivated by the Buddha, you will become ordained . Motivated by the element of purity, after leaving the home life in that place, you will be fully aware of all taints, and will attain Nirvana free of taints ." (In the past) one hundred thousand kalpas there were four (Changing Wheels) named Cela. (In the past) sixty thousand kalpas there were four (the Wheel-turning King) named Upacela. (In the past) fifty thousand kalpas, there were four (the Wheel-turning King) named Cela, accomplished with seven kinds of treasures, and lords of the four continents. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Venerable Nanda[4] uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Nanda is the third part. –OoOoo– 14. CHRONICLES OF ELDER CULLAPANTHAKA At that time, the Conqueror named Padumuttara, who received the offerings, was separated from the crowd, and He dwelt in the Himalayas. At that time, I also lived in a hermitage in the Himalayas. When the Hero arrived shortly, I went to meet the Leader of the World. I took the umbrella covered with the flower and went close to the Taurus. While He was in meditation, I created a disturbance. I have lifted with two hands and have offered the umbrella covered with flowers. The Buddha, the great sage Padumuttara received it. All the gods with joyful hearts went to the Himalayas. They have shown the act of appreciating (saying): " The One with the Right Eye will speak joyfully ." Having said this, the Devas approached the Supreme Being while He was in the air holding my superior pink lotus umbrella. (The Buddha said that): “ The ascetic ascetic raised a canopy with a hundred lotus petals and made offerings to Me, I will praise him. People, listen to Me . (He) will rule the Heavenly Kingdom for twenty-five kalpas and will become the Wheel-turning King thirty-four times . Wherever (that person) reincarnates, whether it is a divine or human being, when standing in the open air, there will be a pink lotus to protect (for him) . In a hundred thousand kalpas (later), a Master named Gotama, of the Okkāka clan, will appear in the world . When the Buddha's Speech is proclaimed, (he) will attain the human nature and will become the master of the body (transformation) created by the mind. There will be two brothers. The two are named Panthaka. Having enjoyed the ultimate goal, both will illuminate the Dharma .” When I was eighteen years old, I ordained into the family life. I have not achieved anything outstanding in the Dharma of the Sakya son. My nature was dull, before I was easy. And my brother chased me away saying, " Now go to your house ." While being banished at the entrance of the monastery for the Congregation, with a sad mind I stood there with longing for the self of a recluse. The Blessed One went to that place. He patted my head. After taking my arm, he led me into the convent for the Congregation. With compassion, the Guru gave me a doormat (and said): " Pray for purity like this in a properly determined direction ." After taking it with both hands, I remembered the pink lotus. There my mind was liberated, I attained the status of arahant. I have attained perfection in all respects in (transforming) the mind-generated bodies. After thoroughly knowing about all piracy, I live free of contraband. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Cullapanthaka uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Cullapanthaka is the fourth part. –OoOoo– 15. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER PIḶINDIVACCHA When the great personage of the World Protector Sumedha entered Nirvana, with a pure mind, with a joyful mind, I made offerings to the stupa. And in that place, those who are Unscrupulous, possessing six supreme wisdom, having great divine power, I summoned them to stay at that place and performed a meal of torture to the Assembly. At that time, Sumedha's attendant named Sumedha was present. At that time, he spoke words of rejoicing. Because of that faith in my heart, I was born in the Heavenly Palace. Eighty-six thousand fairies rejoiced with me. They always submit to only me with all kinds of sensual pleasures, I surpass other Gods; this is the fruit of good karma. In my twenty-fifth life, I was a kingslayer named Varuṇa. At that time, I became a Wheel-turning King whose food is extremely pure. People do not sow seeds, nor follow plowshares, they use this sāli rice neither plowing nor cooking. After ruling the kingdom in that place, I went to the Heavenly Man form again. Then, like me, they were born again, full of wealth. All living beings, friend or not, do not harm me. Even I am loved by all; this is the fruit of good karma. Since I had made alms-giving thirty thousand kalpas ago, I no longer knew the realm of suffering; this is the fruit of applying perfume (at the stupa). In this Bhadda life, I have been the sole ruler of the people, the mighty and powerful Wheel-turning-King. I have abided many people in the five precepts and even helped them to attain leisure, I have been loved by the gods. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Piḷindivaccha said these verses thus. The record of the elder Piḷindivaccha is the fifth part. –OoOoo– 16. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER RAHULA I have installed a mirror in the seven-story mansion of the Blessed One, Padumuttara, the worldly Chief One. Accompanied by a thousand Immortals, the Great Sage, the Lord of mankind, the Human Bull went to the house. While illuminating the incense-room, the God of Devas, the Man-Number, and the Master standing in the Order of Bhikkhus uttered these verses: “ For whomsoever this dwelling is illumined and whose mirrors are well installed, I will exalt him. People, listen to Me . There were mirrors made of gold, made of silver, and made of jade. From the mirror will appear whatever is loved in the mind . He will be the Lord of the Gods who will rule over the Heavenly Kingdom sixty-four times, and after that will become the Wheel-turning-King a thousand times . In the twenty-first incarnation, (he) will be a kingslayer named Vimala, will become the Wheel-turning King who conquers the four directions . There is a city called Reṇuvatī built of bricks, built in the form of a square spanning three hundred do-weeks . There is a castle named Sudassana manifested by the deity Vissakamma, whose noble pointed roofs are adorned with seven kinds of jewels . Bustling with ten kinds of sounds, populated by magicians, (this city) would be similar to the city of Sudassana of the gods . The light of that city emitted even while the sun was rising, and always illuminated the city eight yojanas around . In a hundred thousand kalpas (later), a Master named Gotama, of the Okkāka clan, will appear in the world . Motivated by the element of purity, after passing away from the Doha heaven, he will become the son of the Blessed One Gotama . If he lives at home, he can become a Wheel-turning-King. There is no basis for such a person to go to happiness in the home life . After leaving home, he will leave home, practice well, and will become an Arahant with the name Rahula .” White Great Sage, like a kikī bird protecting its egg, like a bull protecting its tail, I am a prudent person, well-rounded in morality, so I have protected. After understanding His Dharma, I lived happily in the Dharma. After thoroughly knowing about all piracy, I live free of contraband. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Rahula said these verses thus. The record of the elder Rahula is the sixth part. –OoOoo– 17. CHRONICLES OF ELDER UPASENA When the World-Honored One, Padumuttara, the World's Most High, the Human Ox, sat down on the mountainside, I approached that Supreme Being. After seeing the kaṇikāra flower in full bloom, I then cut off the flower stalk. After adorning the canopy, I covered the top of the Buddha. And I offered the food of the finest rice and delicious food. At that place, I took care of meals for eight recluses with the Buddha as the ninth. 763. The Great Hero, the Self, the noble person said: " Because of the offering of this umbrella and the donation of the highest quality rice , because of that faith in the heart, (the person) this) will enjoy success. (This person) will be the Lord of the Gods who will rule over the Heavenly Kingdom thirty-six times . And (this person) will become the Wheel-turning One twenty-one times. The kingdom's territory was vast, incalculable . In the next hundred thousand kalpas, a Master named Gotama, of the lineage, of the Okkāka clan, will appear in the world . While the Dharma is shining, (this person) will come to the human being, will become the Guru's Sravaka, the heir to that (Buddha)'s Dharma, the orthodox, created from the Dhamma, whose name is Upasena .” (This) is my last time in the cycle, all beings have been wiped out, I maintain my last life after having defeated the Demon King with his army. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Venerable Upasena Vaṅgantaputta uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Upasenavaṅgantaputta is the seventh part. –OoOoo– 18. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER RAṬṬHAPĀLA Such a noble elephant, with tusks like a plow handle, which is the king's vehicle of transport, was offered by me to Buddha Padumuttara, the world's Chief Elder. (The elephant) is radiant with a white parasol, with ornaments for elephants. After all the things were appraised, I built a monastery for the Congregation I have built fifty-four thousand castles and have performed a great meal and have offered it to the Great Hermit. The Great Hero, the Autonomous One, the noble person spoke his words of joy. While making all the people rejoice, he preached the path of the Immortal. The Buddha named Padumuttara made a vow about it for me. After sitting down at the Assembly of Bhikkhus, he uttered these verses: “ This man has built fifty-four thousand castles, I will preach the fruit of accomplishment. People, listen to Me . Eighteen thousand pointed roof houses will be revealed in the ultimate heaven (for this person) and they are made entirely of gold . (This person) will be the Lord of the Gods who will rule over the Heavenly Kingdom fifty times and will become the Wheel-turning King fifty-eight times . In a hundred thousand kalpas (later), a Master named Gotama, of the Okkāka clan, will appear in the world . Motivated by the element of purity, after passing away from the world of gods, he will immediately be reborn in a noble family with great wealth . Later, motivated by the factor of purity, he will become ordained and will become the Sravaka of the Master, named Raṭṭhapāla . Having the affirmation of effort, being at peace, free from the germ of rebirth, (he) after fully knowing all the taints, will attain Nirvana, free from the taints ." I have risen, gone, given up the attainment of wealth. Wealth is like a spit, love for wealth is not found in me. I have the diligence, the ability to carry out duties that are a condition for security from attachments. I maintain my last life in the Dharma of the Fully Enlightened One. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Raṭṭhapāla spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Raṭṭhapāla is the eighth part. –OoOoo– 19. CHRONICLES OF ELDER SOPĀKA While I was cleaning the cave in the forest at the highest mountain, the Blessed One named Siddhattha came to see me. After seeing the Buddha approaching, I spread out the carpet and thus offered the seat made of flowers to the worldly Elder. Having sat down in a seat made of flowers, and after learning of my state of rebirth, the World Leader Siddhattha uttered about impermanence: " Indeed, conditioned dharmas are impermanent, having dharmas arise and pass away. After arising they pass away, and their stillness is peaceful ." Having said this, the All-Knowing, the Most High of the world, the Human Bull, the Wise rose into the air like a king swan in the sky. After giving up my wrong views, I developed the perception of impermanence. After practicing for a day, I ended up living there. Motivated by the element of purity, I have enjoyed two attainments (heaven and human). When I reached my last life, I was born into a lowly lineage. After leaving home, I left home life. At the age of seven from my birth, I attained the status of an arahant. With diligence, affirmation, skillful concentration in the precepts, after pleasing the great Dragon Statue, I achieved the cultivation to a higher level. Since I have done the previous deed ninety-four kalpas ago, I no longer know the state of suffering; this is the fruit of the offering of flowers. Since I had trained in perception (of impermanence) ninety-four kalpas ago, I have attained the cessation of cankers while developing that perception (of impermanence). Four (wisdom) analysis, ―(as above)― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Sopāka said these verses thus. The record of the elder Sopāka is the ninth part. –OoOoo– 20. CHRONICLES OF ELDER SUMAṄGALA Intending to offer offerings, I have prepared food. While waiting for the Brahmins, I stood in the large roundabout. And I have seen the Great Enlightened One, Piyadassī, the Scout of the whole world, the Self, the great man. Accompanied by the sravakas, the Blessed One had an aura, like the bright sun, walking on the road. After I put my hands together, I made my mind pure. I have invited even with the mind: " May the Great Sage come near ." Knowing my intentions, the Guru, the Supreme Being in the world, along with a thousand Unscrupulous Ones came to my door. “ White Superman, I salute Thee! O Supreme Being, I salute Thee! Please step up to the castle and sit down on the lion throne. ” The one who has (self) trained has a trained entourage, the one who has (self) passed, the noble one among those who are receiving (being) passing after ascending the castle has sat down in the noble seat. Having gained faith, I personally offered to the Buddha the food that I had (and) prepared in my own house. With a pure faith, with a joyful mind, with excitement, I clasped my hands in prostration to the Supreme Buddha. Oh nobility of the Buddha! Among the 8 classes of Saints who are entourage who are eating food, there are many people who are not illegal. That power is Yours, I go to rely on You. And the Blessed One Piyadassī, the World Elder, the Human Bull, sat down at the Assembly of Bhikkhus and uttered these verses: “ Those who have taken care of food for the Assembly have an upright, centered being, and (to) the Fully Enlightened Tathagata. People, listen to Me . He will rule the Kingdom of Heaven twenty-seven times. Satisfied with one's own deeds, he will be happy in the world of the gods . And he will become a Wheel-turning One eighteen times, and will reign over the five hundred mainland states of the earth ." Having gone deep into the garden, the clearing, and the thick forest, visited by tigers, and after exerting great effort, the defilements were consumed by me. Ever since I've given alms before 1,800 kalpas, I no longer know the suffering; this is the fruit of the meal offering. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Sumaṅgala said these verses like that. The record of the elder Sumaṅgala is the tenth part. –OoOoo– SUMMARY The one with the lion throne, the one with a pillar, the Nanda, the Cullapanthaka, the Piḷinda, and also the Rāhula, the Vaṅganta, the Raṭṭhapāla, the Sopāka, and even the Maṅgala are the ten (records) of the ten. second product.
