HOLY PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS.1=2.VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH. SUDHAPIṆḌIYA . PRODUCTS 91. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER SUDHĀPIṆḌIYA 1554. For someone who is making an offering to a worthy object of offerings it is the Buddha or the Sravaka who is overcoming obstacles, or has overcome sorrow and lamentation, for the person who is making offerings to them. Having attained such fear-free Nirvana, it is impossible to estimate (his) merit as this or that, in any way. Here one can be made lord even of all four continents, that is not worth a sixteenth part of a small portion of the offering. With a pure mind, I made an offering of lime mortar at the crack in the stupa of the Supreme Being Siddhattha. Since I did it 94 kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of the repair. Thirty kalpas ago, there were thirteen named Paṭisaṅkhāra who were Wheel-turners who accomplished the seven kinds of treasures. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Elder Sudhāpiṇḍiya[31] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Sudhāpiṇḍiya is the first part. –OoOoo– 92. CHRONICLES OF ELDER SUCINTITA Overjoyed, with a rejoicing heart I offered the clean chair to the Buddha, the retinue of the sun, the Protector of the World Tissa. Thirty-eight kalpas ago, I was King Mahāruci. Wealth was abundant and beds were not few. After offering Buddha a chair with a pure mind, I enjoyed my karma that was well done by myself in the past. Since I have offered the chair ninety-two kalpas ago, I have no longer known suffering; this is the fruit of the offering of the chair. Thirty-eight kalpas ago, (had) Ruci, Uparuci, and also Mahāruci as the third, who were the Wheel-turning Kings. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Sucintita[32] uttered these verses like that. The record of the elder Sucintita is the second part. –OoOoo– 93. CHRONICLES OF ELDER AḌḌHACELAKA I was in great misery and invaded by the stench. I offered half a piece of cloth to the Blessed One Tissa. After offering half a piece of cloth, I was happy in heaven for a lifetime. In the remaining lives, good deeds were done by me. Since I have offered the cloth ninety-two kalpas ago, I have no longer known suffering; this is the fruit of the offering of cloth. (Formerly) forty-nine kalpas, the thirty-two rulers of the people named Samantacchadana were the Wheel-turning Kings. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. Venerable Venerable Aḍḍhacelaka[33] uttered these verses like that. The record of the elder Aḍḍhacelaka is the third part. –OoOoo– 94. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER SŪCIDĀYAKA In the past, I was a blacksmith in the city of Bandhumā. I have offered sewing needles to the great hermit Vipassī. Due to such karma, wisdom (mine) is equivalent to the excellence of a diamond. I have the detachment from craving, I am liberated, I have attained the cessation of taints. In all my past, present, and future lives, I have accomplished everything through wisdom; this is the fruit of the offering of sewing needles. In the past, ninety-one kalpas ago, there were seven Vajira who were Wheel-turning Kings who achieved the seven kinds of treasures and possessed great power. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Sūcidāyaka[34] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Sūcidāyaka is the fourth part. –OoOoo– 95. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER GANDHAMĀLIYA I made the fragrant stupa covered with jasmine flowers, made worthy of the Buddha, dedicated to the Blessed One Siddhattha. The Buddha, the great Leader of the world, is like a pillar of gold, shining like a water lily, burning like a sacrificial flame. Like a majestic and noble tiger, like a noble born lion, the chief among the recluses, He sat in front of the Assembly of Bhikkhus. After prostrating at the feet of the Guru, I departed, facing north. Since I had offered fragrant garlands ninety-four aeons ago, thanks to the precious fruit of deeds performed to the Buddha in a special way, I no longer knew the state of suffering; this is the fruit of making offerings to the Buddha. (Formerly) thirty-nine kalpas, there were sixteen named Devagandha. They were the Wheel-turning Kings. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Gandhamāliya[35] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Gandhamāliya is the fifth part. –OoOoo– 96. CHRONICLES OF ELDER TIPUPPHIYA Before, I was a wild animal hunter in the jungle. After seeing the green color of the pāṭali tree , I laid down three flowers. 1584. At that time, I plucked the dead leaves and threw them outside. After paying homage to the pāṭali tree, it is as if (respecting) the Fully Enlightened One, the World Leader Vipassī, who is pure inside, pure outside, has been well liberated, no longer has any taints or is in front of him, [36] I was destined to live there. (Since) I made offerings to the Bodhi tree ninety-one kalpas ago, I no longer know the realm of suffering; this is the fruit of making offerings to the Bodhi tree. Thirty-three kalpas ago, thirteen kings named Samantapāsādika were Wheel-turners, accomplished in the seven kinds of treasures, with great power. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Elder Tipupphiya[37] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Tipupphiya is the sixth part. –OoOoo– 97. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER MADHUPIṆḌIKA I have seen the supreme hermit Siddhattha, the recipient of offerings, in the vast jungle, quiet and undisturbed. He is a species of Dragon Statue with the state of Nirvana, like a purebred bull, like a shining osadhī star , revered by the assembly of gods. My happiness was overflowing, and immediately wisdom was born to me. After offering honey to the Guru who had just emerged from meditation, I bowed down at the Master's feet and departed, facing east. (Formerly) thirty-four lives, I was king Sudassana, and at the meal immediately honey and lotus roots flowed, a rain of honey fell; this is the fruit of past karma.. Since I have offered honey ninety-four kalpas ago, I have no longer known suffering; this is the fruit of the honey offering. Thirty-four kalpas ago, those four Sudassanas were Wheel-turning Kings who had accomplished the seven kinds of treasures and possessed great power. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. Venerable Venerable Madhupiṇḍika[38] uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Madhupiṇḍika is the seventh part. –OoOoo– 98. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER SENĀSANADĀYAKA I offered a carpet of leaves to the Blessed One Siddhattha. I have arranged objects and flowers around. I have enjoyed a castle with such lovely qualities so precious. And flowers of great value poured forth from my bed. I lay in my decorated bed, lined with flowers, and immediately there was a rain of flowers on my bed. (Since) I have offered a carpet of leaves ninety-four kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the treasure of the carpet. Previously in the fifth life, those seven rulers of the people named Tiṇasantharaka were born, who were Wheel-turning Kings. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Elder Senāsanadāyaka[39] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Senāsanadāyaka is the eighth part. –OoOoo– 99. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER VEYYĀVACCAKA An extremely large group of people came to the Blessed One Vipassī. I am an active service worker in all matters. And I do not have anything worthy of offering to the Great Hermit, the Great Hermit. I have bowed down at the feet of the Guru with a pure mind. Since I performed service ninety-one kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of the service. And before in the eighth life, I was King Sucintita, a Wheel-turner, accomplished in the seven kinds of treasures, of great power. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. Venerable Venerable Veyyāvaccaka[40] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Veyyāvaccaka is the ninth part. –OoOoo– 100. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER BUDDHUPAṬṬHĀKA I have been the whistle blower and conch shell (announcement) of the Blessed One Vipassī. I am constantly engaged in service to the Sage, the Great Hermit. Look at the fruit of such service to the Protector of the World. There are sixty thousand musicians always around me. (Since) I served the Great Hermit ninety-one kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of service. Twenty-four kalpas ago, sixteen kings named Mahānigghosa were Wheel-turners of great power. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. Venerable Venerable Buddhupaṭṭhāka[41] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Buddhupaṭṭhāka is the tenth part. –OoOoo– SUMMARY (The taste) the lime mortar, the one who has thought well, the (half) piece of cloth, the sewing needle, the one who has a fragrant garland, the one who offers three flowers, the honey, the place to sit, the service, and servants; (total) exactly sixty verses have been narrated in this chapter. The Sudhāpiṇḍiya is the tenth chapter. –OoOoo– NOW FOR THE SUMMARIES OF THE ARTICLES The Buddha product is the first, the lion's treasure, the Subhūti, the Kuṇḍadhāna, the Upāli, the fan, the thought of it, the Nāgasamāla, the timira (flower) , and the (taste ) raised) lime mortar; The ten chapters have one thousand four hundred verses and fifty-five more. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER BHIKKHĀDĀYAKA The Fully Enlightened One has a bright yellow skin color, the recipient of offerings, while going out of the vast forest, he reached Nirvana, freed from craving. I offered a spoonful of food to the Great Hermit Siddhattha, the Great Hero, the Wise One who was so peaceful. While the Buddha, the retinue of the sun, was helping the masses of people who were following in their footsteps to attain Nirvana, a sublime happiness arose for me. Since I have made almsgiving ninety-four kalpas ago, I have no longer known suffering; this is the fruit of the offering of food. Eighty-seven kalpas ago, it was the seven named Mahāreṇu who were Wheel-turners who attained the seven kinds of treasures. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Thera Bhikkhādāyaka thus uttered these verses. The record of the elder Bhikkhādāyaka is the first part. –OoOoo– 102. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER ĀṆASAÑÑAKA The Buddha, the Great Hermit, had a bright yellow skin like a purebred bull, like an elephant mātaṅga (of age) abstinent in three places. I have seen the Great Elder of the world walking on the road, illuminating in all directions like the full moon. Having calmed my mind in (his) wisdom, I folded my hands and bowed down to Siddhattha with a calm mind, with a joyful intention. Since I have done that work ninety-four kalpas ago, I have no longer known suffering; this is the fruit of contemplation on wisdom (of the Buddha). In the past 73 kalpas, the sixteen leading human beings were the Wheel-turning Kings who achieved the seven kinds of treasures and possessed great majesty. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Elder Ñāṇasaññaka[42] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Ñāṇasaññaka is the second part. –OoOoo– 103. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER UPPALAHATTHI At that time I was a garland maker residing in (city) Tivarā. I have seen the Buddha, the Immaculate, the World Leader Siddhattha. 1625. With a pure faith, with joy in mind, I offered a bouquet of flowers. Due to the action of that karma, wherever I am born I enjoy the growth treasures of my previously well done work, I am surrounded by the good people of Malla ; this is the fruit of making offerings to the Buddha. (Since) I offered the flower ninety-four kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of making offerings to the Buddha. Considering the ninety-four (kalpas) except the present, there were already five hundred kings named Najjūpama. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Uppalahatthiya uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Uppalahatthiya is the third part. –OoOoo– 104. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER PADAPŪJAKA I offered jasmine flowers to the Blessed One Siddhattha. I laid down seven flowers at (His) feet with joy. Because of that, I am now superior to humans and gods. I maintain my last life in the Dharma of the Fully Enlightened One. (Since) I offered the flower ninety-four kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of the flower offering. Previously in the fifth life, there were thirteen Wheel-turning Kings named Samantagandha who were rulers of the people (conquerors) of the four directions. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. Venerable Venerable Padapūjaka[43] uttered these verses like that. The record of the elder Padapūjaka is the fourth part. –OoOoo– 105. CHRONICLES OF ELDER MUṬṬHIPUPPHIYA At that time, I was already a garland maker named Sudassana. I have seen the Buddha, the Immaculate One, the Most High of the world, the Human Niu. I took the jasmine flower and made an offering to (the Buddha) Padumuttara. Having pure vision, having good intentions, I have attained the divine eye. Due to the offering of this flower and due to the aspirational powers of the mind, I did not go to a miserable state for a hundred thousand kalpas. Thirty-six kalpas ago, there were sixteen kings named Devuttara who were wheel-turners of great power. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Muṭṭhipupphiya[44] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Muṭṭhipupphiya is the fifth part. –OoOoo– 106. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER UDAKAPŪJAKA (I have seen) the Perfectly Enlightened One, whose skin color is bright yellow, shining like a flame from melted butter, burning like a sacrificial flame, moving through the air. I scooped up the water with my hand and threw it into the air. The Great Hero, the Buddha, the Compassionate One, the Hermit accepted. Having learned of my intentions, the master named Padumuttara, standing in the air, uttered this verse: " Because of the offering of this water and the arising of rapture, (he) is not reborn in a miserable state for a hundred thousand kalpas ." By doing so in the Sovereign of men, the Most High of the world, the Human Ox, after renouncing superiority and inferiority, I attained the status of Immovable. (In the past) six thousand five hundred kalpas, those three Wheel-turning Kings named Sahassarāja were the rulers of the people (conquering) of the four directions. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Udakapūjaka[45] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Udakapūjaka is the sixth part. –OoOoo– 107. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER NAḶAMĀLIYA Buddha Padumuttara, such an Elder of the world, such a tranquil being, sat down on the grass. After taking the reed garland and tying it into a fan, I offered it to the Buddha, the Lord of mankind. The Omniscient One, the World Leader, received the fan. After knowing my intentions, he uttered this verse: “ Just as My body is cooled, irritation is not known, so may your mind be liberated from the three fires .” All the gods who are dependent on the forest have gathered. We listen to the teachings of the Buddha which makes the donor happy. Sitting there in front of the Assembly of Bhikkhus, the Blessed One, while making his benefactor delighted, uttered these verses: “ By the offering of this fan and by the vows of the mind, (this person) will become a Wheel-turning King named Subbata . Through the remainder of that karma, motivated by the pure factor, (this person) will become a Wheel-turning King named Māluta . Due to the offering of this fan and due to the completeness of the reverence, (this person) does not go to a miserable state for a hundred thousand kalpas ." (Formerly) thirty thousand kalpas, thirty-eight of them named Subbata. (Formerly) twenty-nine thousand kalpas, (had) eight persons named Māluta. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Venerable Naḷamāliya[46] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Naḷamāliya is the seventh part. (The seventh chant is ended.) –OoOoo– 108. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER SANŪPAṬṬHĀPAKA Having gone deep into the quiet, undisturbed dense forest, I thus offered the lion throne to (Buddha) Atthadassī. I took a handful of garlands and circumambulated Him. After serving the Guru, I departed, facing north. By doing so in the Lord of men, the Most High of the world, the Man-Taurus, I myself attained Nirvana, all beings wiped out. Ever since I had offered alms before one thousand and eight hundred kalpas, I no longer knew the realm of suffering; this is the treasure of the lion throne. Seven hundred kalpas ago, (I was) the Kingslayer Sannibbāpaka, the Wheel-turner, accomplished in the seven kinds of treasures, of great power. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Āsanūpaṭṭhāpaka[47] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Āsanūpaṭṭhāpaka is the eighth part. –OoOoo– 109. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER BIḶĀLIDĀYAKA I live on a carpet of leaves not far from the Himalayas. At that time, I gained a liking for grasses and got into the habit of sleeping (in the carpet of leaves). After bringing and preparing the apple(s), bhallātaka , and billa fruit(s) , I dug up the kalamba , biḷālī , and takkala tuberous roots . After learning of my intentions, the Worldly Knower Padumuttara, who received the offerings, went to my area. When the Dragon Statue, the God of the Devas, the Human Bull came, I offered the biḷālī tuber and placed it in the bowl. At that time, while making me happy, the Great Hung took advantage of it. After using it, the Omniscient One uttered this verse: " After making your mind pure, you offered the biḷālī tubers to Me, you did not go to a miserable state for a hundred thousand kalpas ." Fifty-four kalpas ago, (I was) a man named Sumekhaliya, a Wheel-turner, accomplished in the seven kinds of treasures, of great power. (This) is my last time in transmigration, all existences have been wiped away. I maintain my last life in the Dharma of the Fully Enlightened One. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Elder Biḷālidāyaka[48] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Biḷālidāyaka is the ninth part. –OoOoo– 110. CHRONICLES OF THE ELDER REṆUPŪJAKA The Fully Enlightened One has a golden skin color as brilliant as the sun with a hundred rays of light, making all directions glow like the full moon. He is surrounded by the Sravakas as the earth is surrounded by the seas. I took the nāga flower and offered the pollen powders to (the Buddha) Vipassī. (Since) I have offered powdered pollen ninety-one kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of making offerings to the Buddha. Forty-five kalpas ago, I was a king-slayer named Reṇu, a Wheel-turner, accomplished in the seven kinds of treasures, with great power. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Thera Reṇupūjaka[49] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Reṇupūjaka is the tenth part. –OoOoo– SUMMARY The taste offering food, the taste contemplating wisdom, the taste related to the bouquet (flower), the taste of the feet, the taste of holding the flower, the taste of water, the taste of reed flowers, the taste of serving service, the offering of biḷālī tubers , and pollen; (total) there are sixty-six verses.
