APADĀNAPĀḶI & HOLY PERSONALITY.4. Volume One VI. VĪJANĪ PRODUCTS 51. Chronicles of the Elder Vidhūpanadāyaka 1258. The fan was offered by me to Buddha Padumuttara, such an Elder of the world, such a Lord of mankind. 1259. After having made my mind pure, I put my hands together. I paid homage to the Fully Enlightened One and left, facing north. 1260. After taking hold of the fan, the worldly Supreme Master, while standing in the place of the Assembly of Bhikkhus, uttered this verse: 1261. “Due to the offering of this fan and through vows force of mind, (he) does not fall into the lower realms for a hundred thousand kalpas." 1262. There is effort, affirmative, is static is the virtue of the mind, at the age of seven from the time I was born, I have achieved the Arahantship. 1263. (Formerly) sixty thousand kalpas, there were sixteen kings named Vījamāna who were Wheel-turners of great power. 1264. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―(as above)― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Vidhūpanadāyaka[1] said these verses thus. The record of the elder Vidhūpanadāyaka is the first part. --ooOoo-- 52. Chronicles of Elder Sataraṃsika 1265. After climbing a high rock, the Supreme Being sat down. I am a brahmin well versed in mantras (dwelling) not far from the mountain. 1266. When the Great Hung, the God of the gods, the man of the Niu sat down, I put my hands together and praised the World Leader, saying: 1267. “This is the Buddha, the Great Hung, the great one. expounding the noble Dharma, leading the Order of Bhikkhus, shining like a bonfire. 1268. Just as the ocean does not decline, Just as the sea is difficult to cross, so the Right Eye preacher of the Dharma is like the (lion) king of animals who is not afraid.” 1269. Knowing my intention, the Leader Padumuttara, standing in the place of the Assembly of Bhikkhus, uttered these verses: 1270. “This joining of hands was offered and the supreme Buddha was praised by who, (that person) will rule the heavenly kingdom for thirty thousand kalpas. 1271. Until one hundred thousand lives (later), the Fully Enlightened One named Aṅgīrasa, who has abandoned sin, will appear. 1272. (That person) will be the heir to that (Buddha)'s Dharma, the orthodox, created from the Dhamma, the Arahant with the name Sataraṃsī." 1273. At the age of seven from my birth, I left home life. I have radiating light, (hence) my name is Sataraṃsī (hundred rays of light). 1274. At the roof or at the base of a tree, I am a meditator, enjoying meditation. I maintain my last life in the Dharma of the Fully Enlightened One. 1275. (Previously) sixty thousand kalpas, (there were) four persons named Rāma who were the Wheel-turning Kings who achieved seven kinds of treasures, having great power. 1276. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Sataraṃsiya said these verses thus. The record of the elder Sataraṃsika is the second part. --ooOoo-- 53. Chronicles of the Elder Sayanadāyaka 1277. With a pure mind, I offered the bed to that Buddha Padumuttara, who had compassion for all the world. 1278. Due to the offering of that bed, there is accomplishment of the seed (sown) in the good field, the wealth is born here for me; this is the treasure of the bed. 1279. I do sleep in the air, I support the earth, I have dominion over lives; this is the treasure of the bed. 1280. (Previously) five thousand kalpas, there were eight (named) Mahāvara. And (formerly) three thousand four hundred kalpas, (had) four people of great power. 1281. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―(as above)― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Sayanadāyaka[2] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Sayanadāyaka is the third part. --ooOoo-- 54. Chronicles of the Elder Gandhodakiya 1282. There was a festival at the Mahabodhi tree of Padumuttara Buddha. I brought a decorated gourd and I offered scented water. 1283. At the time of watering the Bodhi tree, there was a big cloud that rained. And there was a loud noise while the thunder was breaking. 1284. I died in that place (and was reborn) like the speed of that lightning. While standing in the world of gods, I uttered this verse: 1285. “Oh Buddha! Oh Dharma! O achievement of our Guru! (When) my body falls, I am happy in the world of the gods.” 1286. My abode is high, there are a hundred floors raised, there are a hundred thousand young girls always surrounding me. 1287. My sicknesses are not known, my sorrow is not there, I see no anger; this is the fruit of good karma. 1288. (Previously) two thousand eight hundred kalpas, I was king Saṃvasita, the Wheel-turning-King who attained seven kinds of treasures and possessed great power. 1289. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―(as above)― I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Gandhodakiya[3] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Gandhodakiya is the fourth part. --ooOoo-- 55. Chronicles of the Elder Opavayha 1290. I offered a thoroughbred horse to Buddha Padumuttara. After making offerings to the Fully Enlightened One, I went back to my house. 1291. The one named Devala, the foremost Sravaka of the Master, the heir of the noble Dharma, came to see me (saying): 1292. “The Blessed One used only bowls and utensils. his essentials, thoroughbred horses are not suitable. Knowing of your intentions, the Right Eye has consented." 1293. After giving the appraiser the wind-speed Sindhu horse as a means of rapid travel, I offered the appropriate items to the Buddha Padumuttara. 1294. Wherever I go to be reborn, whether I am a God or a human being, there are horses with the speed of the wind, worthy of taming, adorned, (have) been born for me. 1295. Those who have attained to the higher ranks (with him), their interests are well accomplished. If Buddha will exist in the world, I can see him again. 1296. I have been the king of great power, the conqueror of the four directions, the lord of Jambudīpa twenty-eight times. 1297. This last time of mine is the last existence in rotation. After giving up the odds, I attained Immovable status. 1298. (Previously) thirty-four thousand kalpas, I was a king-slayer with great power, accomplished seven kinds of treasures, and had great power. 1299. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six winning wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Thera Opavayha uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Opavayha is the fifth part. --ooOoo-- 56. Chronicles of the Elder Saparivārāsana 1300. I made food offerings to Buddha Padumuttara. I went to that place of longevity and sprinkled jasmine flowers. 1301. The Buddha, the great Leader of the world, who has an upright and centered being, sitting in that seat praised the food: 1302. Just like a little seed is sown. down into fertile fields, when the right showers fall, the results please the farmer. 1303. In the same way, this portion of food has been sown by you in a fertile field, and while you are born in the realm of the righteous, the precious fruit will please you.” 1304. Having said this, having praised the food part, The Fully Enlightened One named Padumuttara has gone, facing north. 1305. I have been confined in the precepts of Pātimokkha and in the five senses, attached to solitude, I live without any contraband. 1306. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Saparivārāsana[4] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Saparivārāsana is the sixth part. --ooOoo-- 57. Chronicles of Elder Pañcadīpaka 1307. After having settled well in the Dharma of Buddha Padumuttara, who had compassion for all living beings, I had a mature view. 1308. I made the offerings of lamps after I had placed them around the Bodhi tree. While having faith, I immediately lit the lamps. 1309. Wherever I go to be reborn, whether I am a celestial or a human being, there are people holding torches in the air; this is the fruit of the offering of lamps. 1310. I experienced visions around a hundred yojanas, after having passed through the wall, through the rock, and through the mountain. 1311. (Formerly) three thousand four hundred kalpas, the kings named Satacakkhu were the Wheel-turning Kings with great authority, great power. 1312. Thanks to the remnants of that karma, I have achieved the cessation of taints. I maintain my last life in the Dharma of the Fully Enlightened One. 1313. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberations, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Pañcadīpaka[5] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Pañcadīpaka is the seventh part. --ooOoo-- 58. Chronicles of the Elder Dhajadāyaka 1314. At the Bodhi tree of the Buddha Padumuttara, I became overjoyed. With a joyful heart I hung the flag at the top of the tree. 1315. I picked up the fallen leaves and left them outside. I have paid homage to the supreme Bodhi tree as (to) the Perfectly Enlightened One, who is pure inside, pure outside, liberated, free from taints, right in front of me. 1316. The Knower of the World Padumuttara, the recipient of offerings, standing in the place where the Assembly of Bhikkhus uttered these verses: 1317. "Due to both the offering of the banner and this service, he does not go to a miserable state for a hundred thousand kalpas. 1318. (He) will enjoy the heavenly splendor not infrequently among the gods, will be the king of the land hundreds of times, and will become the Wheel-turning King named Uggata. 1319. Motivated by the pure factor, after enjoying attainment (one) will delight in the Dhamma of the Blessed One Gotama." 1320. With the affirmation of effort, peace, no seeds of rebirth, I maintain my last life in the Dharma of the Perfectly Enlightened One. 1321. (Formerly) fifty-one thousand aeons, (I was) named Uggata. (Formerly) fifty thousand kalpas, (I was) the Ksdhartha named Megha. 1322. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberations, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Thera Dhajadāyaka[6] uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Dhajadāyaka is the eighth part. --ooOoo-- 59. Chronicles of the Elder Paduma 1323. While proclaiming the Four Truths, while helping the masses to realize Nibbana, the noble Dharma carrier (had) rained the rain of the Immortal. 1324. I took the pink lotus with the stem and stood on the rooftop. Overjoyed, I threw into the air (offering) the sage Padumuttara. 1325. And while the pink lotus was coming, just then there was a miracle. Knowing my intention, the noble among the preachers took hold. 1326. After holding the supreme lotus among flowers with his first-class hand, (the Buddha) standing in the place of the Assembly of Bhikkhus uttered these verses: 1327. "Whoever threw this pink lotus to the All-Knowing, the Guide, I will praise him. Please listen to Me. 1328. (He) will be the Lord of the gods who will rule over the heavenly kingdom for thirty eons, and will reign over the land kingdoms of the earth seven hundred times. 1329. After counting the number of petals in that place, (that person) will become a Wheel-turning-King (so many times), then there will be a rain of flowers falling from the air. 1330. In one hundred thousand kalpas (later), a Master named Gotama, from the Okkāka clan will appear in the world. 1331. As an heir to that (Buddha)'s Dharma, being orthodox, created from the Dharma, after knowing all about all the contrabands, (he) will Nirvana without any contraband. ” 1332. I have come out of my heart (mother) with self-awareness, with mindfulness (complete). By the time I was five years old from birth, I had attained arahantship. 1333. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six victory have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Paduma uttered these verses thus. The Chronicles of the Elder Paduma is the ninth part. --ooOoo-- 60. Chronicles of the Elder Asanabodhiya 1334. At the age of seven from my birth, I saw the Leader of the World. With a pure mind, with a joyful mind, I approached the Supreme Being. 1335. With respect to the Blessed One Tissa, such an Elder of the world, I became elated. With a joyful mind, I planted the supreme Bodhi tree. 1336. (Bodhi Tree) is a tree that grows on the ground named Asana. I have been taking care of the supreme Bodhi tree Asana for five years. 1337. After seeing the tree blossomed, it was a miracle that made the hairs flutter. While praising my work, I went to meet the supreme Buddha. 1338. At that time, the Fully Enlightened Tissa, the Self, that noble person, after sitting down in the Assembly of Bhikkhus, spoke these verses: 1339. "Who has planted the Bodhi tree? this person and have respected the offering to the Buddha, I will praise him. Please listen to Me. 1340. He will rule the heavenly kingdom among the gods for thirty kalpas, and will become the Wheel-turning King sixty-four times. 1341. Motivated by the element of purity, after dying from the heaven of Dou Dat himself, after enjoying two achievements, he will be happy in the human being. 1342. Having the affirmation of effort, being peaceful, no longer having the seeds of rebirth, after knowing all about all the taints, he will be in Nirvana without any contraband.” 1343. I was attached to solitude, peace, no seeds of rebirth. After severing the bondage as a male elephant (untied), I lived free of lust. 1344. Since I planted the Bodhi tree ninety-two kalpas ago, I no longer know the suffering; this is the fruit of planting the Bodhi tree. 1345. Seventy-four lives ago, (I was) known as Daṇḍasena. At that time, I was a Wheel-turning King who attained the seven kinds of treasures. 1346. Seventy-three kalpas ago, there were seven lords who were Wheel-turning Kings named Samantanemi. 1347. Twenty-five kalpas ago, (I was) a king-slayer named Puṇṇaka, a Wheel-turning-King who attained seven kinds of treasures and possessed great power. 1348. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Asanabodhiya[7] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Asanabodhiya is the tenth part. --ooOoo-- Summary The taste of the fan, the taste of Sataraṃsī, the bed, the taste of fragrant water, the taste of transportation, the taste of dependents, the lamp, the banner, the taste of the pink lotus offering , and the Bodhi tree is the tenth. Such, (total) ninety-two verses have been mentioned. The Vījanī product is the sixth. --ooOoo-- VII. SAKACINTANIYA PRODUCTS 61. Chronicles of the Elder Sakacintaniya 1349. I have seen a vast, dense forest with little noise, no disturbances, the abode of hermits, the place to receive things. donation. 1350. After making the sand stupa, I sprinkled many different flowers. I paid homage to (the stupa) that was created as (to) the Fully Enlightened One in front of me. 1351. Being a king who has attained the seven kinds of treasures, the lord of the land, I am satisfied with my own karma; this is the fruit of making offerings to the stupa. 1352. (Since) I have offered the flower ninety-one kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of making offerings to the stupa. 1353. (Formerly) eighty kalpas, I was the Wheel-turning King Anantayasa accomplished with the seven kinds of treasures, the lord of the four continents. 1354. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Sakacintaniya[8] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Sakacintaniya is the first part. --ooOoo-- 62. Chronicles of Elder Avopupphiya 1355. After leaving the residence and stepping on the walking path, while proclaiming the Four Truths, he preached on the path of Immortality. 1356. Recognizing the voice of such a Sikhī as the supreme Buddha, I took various flowers and threw them in the air. 1357. By doing so in the Lord of men, the Most High of the world, the Human Ox, after giving up superiority and inferiority, I attained the position of Immovable. 1358. (Since) I offered the flower thirty-one kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of the flower offering. 1359. Twenty kalpas ago, (I was) a Kingslayer named Sumedha, a Wheel-turning King who achieved seven kinds of treasures, with great power. 1360. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Avopupphiya said these verses thus. The record of the elder Avopupphiya is the second part. --ooOoo-- 63. Chronicles of Elder Paccāgamaniya 1361. At that time, I was a red goose on the banks of the Sindhu river. And I have well guarded against evil, having the pure food of herbs in the water. 1362. I saw the Buddha, the Immaculate, moving in the air. I plucked the sālā flower with my beak and offered it to (the Buddha) Vipassī. 1363. "Whoever has faith in the Tathagata that is not shaken, is well established, and because of that faith in his heart, he does not go to suffering." 1364. Indeed, I have succeeded perfectly in the manifestation of the supreme Buddha. Good seeds were planted by me while I was a bird. 1365. (Since) I have offered the flower ninety-one kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of the flower offering. 1366. (Formerly) seventeen kalpas, these eight had the same name, Sucāru-dassana. They were already mighty Kings of Wheels. 1367. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. Venerable Venerable Paccāgamaniya[9] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Paccāgamaniya is the third part. --ooOoo-- 64. Chronicles of the Elder Parappasādaka 1368. “Who has seen the All-Enlightened One with the bright yellow skin, the noble and noble Hero, the Great Hermit, the Conqueror, without having faith? 1369. Just as the Himalayas are immeasurable, just as the sea is insurmountable, likewise in the Buddha's meditation, who is it who sees without faith? 1370. Just as the earth with its diverse forest belt is immeasurable, likewise the Buddha's precepts, who can see without faith? 1371. Just as space is undisturbed, just as the sky is immeasurable, likewise of the Buddha's wisdom, who is one who sees without faith?" 1372. The brahmin named Sena praised the supreme Buddha, the undefeatable Siddhattha, with these four verses. 1373. (He) did not go to suffering in ninety-four kalpas, have enjoyed good success in the heavens is not a few. 1374. After praising the World Leader ninety-four kalpas ago, I no longer know the suffering; this is the fruit of praise. 1375. (Previously) fourteen kalpas, there were four Uggatas named the Wheel-turning Kings who achieved seven kinds of treasures, with great majesty. 1376. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable thera Parappasādaka [10] said these verses thus. The record of the elder Parappasādaka is the fourth part. --ooOoo-- 65. Chronicles of the Elder Bhisadāyaka 1377. The one named Vessabhū was the third among the Hermits.[11] The Supreme Being has gone deep into the forest and has dwelt in the jungle. 1378. I took the lotus root and tuber and went close to the Buddha. Having gained faith, I personally offered it to the Buddha. 1379. And by the trunk I collided with the noble Enlightenment Vessabhū. I know no happiness equal to or greater than that. 1380. (This is) my last time in transmigration, all beings have been wiped away. Good things were planted by me while I was a dragon statue. 1381. Since I have done it 31 kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of the offering of lotus root. 1382. And (previously) thirteen kalpas, there were sixteen kings named Samodhāna who were the rulers of mankind, the Wheel-turning Kings of great power. 1383. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Bhisadāyaka[12] uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Bhisadāyaka is the fifth part. --ooOoo-- 66. Chronicles of Elder Sucintita 1384. I was a (hunter) wanderer in the rugged areas of the mountains. Just like a lion was born well, I kill wild animals and live in the hills. 1385. As for the Blessed One Atthadassī, the All-Knowing, the noble one among the preachers, intending to help me. He went to the highest mountain. 1386. After killing the spotted deer, I went to eat the meat. At that time, the Blessed One, while begging for food, approached. 1387. I took delicious pieces of meat and made offerings to that Guru. At that time, while helping me to attain Nirvana, the Great Hero spoke a word of rejoicing. 1388. Because of that faith in the mind, I went into the rugged area of ​​the mountain. Having caused rapture to arise, I passed away in that place. 1389. Because of that meat offering and by the vows of the mind, I was happy in the world of gods for one thousand five hundred kalpas. 1390. Because of that meat offering and the remembrance of the Buddha, in the remaining lifetimes good things have been accumulated by me. 1391. (Previously) thirty-eight lives, there were eight named Dīghāyu. Six thousand kalpas ago, there were two named Varuṇa. 1392. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Sucintita[13] uttered these verses thus. The Chronicles of Elder Sucintita is the sixth part. --ooOoo-- 67. Chronicles of Elder Vatthadāyaka 1393. At that time, I was a bird with beautiful colors, the ruler of the human birds. I saw the Buddha of the Immaculate Conception walking on Mount Gandhamādana. 1394. After taking the form of a human bird, I took the form of a young man. Like that I offered a cloth to the Sovereign of men. 1395. And after receiving that piece of cloth, the Buddha, the great Leader of the world, the Master standing in the air, uttered this verse: 1396. "Due to the offering of this cloth and the vows of the mind, after abandoning the origin of the human bird (that person) will rejoice in the world of the gods." 1397. And after praising the offering of the cloth, the World-Honored One Atthadassī, the World's Most High, the Human Bull, passed away, facing north. 1398. While being born in the realm of existence, I obtained the achievement of cloth, having a canopy in the air; this is the fruit of the offering of the cloth. 1399. (Formerly) 36 lives, there were seven people named Aruṇaka who were the mighty Wheel-turning Kings, the rulers of mankind. 1400. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. Venerable Venerable Vatthadāyaka[14] uttered these verses like that. The record of the elder Vatthadāyaka is the seventh part. --ooOoo-- 68. Chronicles of Elder Ambadāyaka 1401. The Blessed One Anomadassī, who had no seeds of rebirth, sat in the hills and spread with loving kindness in the world without limit. 1402. At that time, I was already a monkey on the highest mountain of Greece. After seeing the immeasurable Anoma, I made my mind pure in the Buddha. 1403. At that time, not far from the Himalayas, there were mango trees that were already bearing fruit. I have picked ripe fruit from that place and have offered mangoes and honey. 1404. 1405. Buddha, The Great Sage Anomadass made this wish for me, saying: "Due to both the offering of honey and the offering of this mango, (he) will delight in the world of the gods for fifty-seven kalpas. , and in the remaining lives will alternate reincarnation (between heaven and human realm). 1406. (He) will cause evil karma to be eliminated through the wisdom of enlightenment, which is fully matured, will not go to the lower realms, and will burn away defilements.” 1407. I have been trained with the ultimate training by the Great Hermit. After giving up the odds, I attained Immovable status. 1408. (Formerly) seven thousand seven hundred kalpas, those fourteen kings named Ambaṭṭhaja were the Wheel-turning Kings of great power. 1409. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Ambadāyaka[15] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Ambadāyaka is the eighth part. --ooOoo-- 69. Chronicles of Elder Sumana 1410. At that time, I was a garland maker named Sumana. I have seen the Buddha, the Immaculate, the recipient of the world's offerings. 1411. I took the supreme jasmine flower with both hands and offered it to Buddha Sikhī, the retinue of the world. 1412. Due to the offering of this flower and due to the force of the intention, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of the flower offering. 1413. (Since) I have offered the flower thirty-one kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of the flower offering. 1414. (Previously) twenty-six kalpas, there were four kings with great fame as the Wheel-turning Kings who accomplished seven kinds of treasures. 1415. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Sumana uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Sumana is the ninth part. --ooOoo-- 70. Chronicles of the Elder Pupphacaṅgoṭiya 1416. (Buddhist Sikhī) is like a lion whose physique is fearless, like a lion who was born noble, like a mighty tiger noble and noble, like a bird of the great human bird. 1417. The Buddha Sikhī, the refuge of the three worlds, the one who had no desire, the one who was not defeated, the great one among the recluses sat down, surrounded by the Assembly of Bhikkhus. 1418. I have placed the finest anoja flower in the chest. With that same chest, I reached the supreme Buddha. 1419. Because of that faith in the heart towards the Lord of mankind, the Human Niu, after giving up the odds I attained Immovable status. 1420. Since I had done it thirty-one kalpas ago, I no longer know the suffering; this is the fruit of making offerings to the Buddha. 1421. (Previously) full thirty kalpas, there were five named Devabhūti who were the Kings who turned the wheel of kings who achieved seven kinds of treasures. 1422. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. Venerable Venerable Pupphacaṅgoṭiya[16] uttered these verses like that. The record of the elder Pupphacaṅgoṭiya is the tenth part. --ooOoo-- Summary The one who has his thoughts, the Avopupphī, with the one who returns, the one who creates trust in others, the one who offers the lotus root, the one who has wise thinking. skillful, the one who offers the cloth, the one who offers the mango, the one who offers the Sumana, and also the one who has a flower chest. Previously, in the third life, (I was) the King-slayer named Bhisa, the Wheel-turning-King who had achieved seven kinds of treasures and had great power. 1439. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―(as above)― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Thera Bhisāluvadāyaka[18] uttered these verses thus. Because of that faith in my heart towards the Lord of Mankind, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of a partial real thing. 1442. In the past forty kalpas, (I was) a king-slayer named Varuṇa, a Wheel-turning-King attained seven kinds of treasures, with great power. 1443. Not far from the Himalayas was a large natural lake covered with hundreds of leaves and home to many other birds. together. 1445. I bathed and drank in that place, and I dwelt not far away. I saw the head of the recluse moving by air. 1446. Knowing my intention, the Master, the Supreme Being in the world, immediately descended from heaven to stand on the earth. 1447. With the horn, I brought back the grass and offered the seat. The Blessed One, the great Leader of the three realms, sat down there. 1448. After pacifying my mind, I bowed down to the World Leader. I stooped to move to the side while contemplating the Great Sage. 1449. Because of that faith in my heart, I was born in the realm of Hoa Lac Thien, I no longer know the suffering scene; this is the fruit of the lining (seat). 1450. Previously in the second incarnation, (I was) the King-slayer named Miga, the Wheel-turning King achieved seven kinds of treasures, with great power. 1451. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six transcendental wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. (Previously) thirty thousand kalpas, (appeared) the Perfectly Enlightened, the World Leader named Sumedha had thirty-two good generals. 1453. Having a golden skin color, He is the Lord of mankind like that. Five sewing needles were offered to him by me for the purpose of sewing clothes. 1454. It is thanks to the donation of that needle that sharp, gentle, comfortable wisdom, with a clear perception of the subtle meaning, has arisen to me. 1455. Four kings named Dipadādhipati were the Wheel-turning Kings who achieved seven kinds of treasures, with great majesty. 1456. My afflictions have been burned, all existences have been erased. I became rejoicing, with a rejoicing mind I offered flowers. I bowed down to the Knower of the World Tissa, the Protector, the God of mankind. 1461. Since I have done that work ninety-two kalpas ago, I have known no suffering; this is the fruit of the flower offering. 1462. Sixty-three kalpas ago, (I was) a person named Abhisammata, a Wheel-turning King who attained seven kinds of treasures and possessed great power. 1463. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―(as above)― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. Venerable Venerable Pāṭaliupphiya[22] uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Pāṭaliupphiya is the eighth part. --ooOoo-- 79. Chronicles of Elder Ṭhitañjaliya 1464. In the past, I was a wild animal hunter in the jungle. At that place, I saw the Perfectly Enlightened One with the noble appearance Tissa. 1465. He was sitting not far away, on his carpet of leaves. I folded my hands towards Him and went away, facing east. 1466. Then, the lightning that struck at that moment hit my head. At the time of death, I did the clasping of hands again. 1467. Since I have done the clasping of hands ninety-two kalpas ago, I no longer know the suffering; this is the fruit of clasping hands. 1468. (Formerly) fifty-four kalpas, (I was) a person named Migaketu, a Wheel-turning-King who attained seven kinds of treasures and possessed great power. 1469. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six winning wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Conqueror named Padumuttara is the master of all dharmas. As one who had (by himself) trained, accompanied by those who had been trained, the Conqueror had left the city. 1471. At that time, in the city of Haṃsavatī I was a garland maker. At that place which flower was perfect, I took three flowers. 1472. I saw the Buddha, the Immaculate, in the opposite direction of the market place. After seeing the Perfectly Enlightened One, at that time I thought like this: 1473. “What do I get with these flowers when I bring them to the king? Can I get the village, or the village field, or the thousand coins? 1474. The Protector of the World is the tame of those who have not been tamed, the wise, the source of peace for all sentient beings. After making offerings to him, we will gain immortality. ” 1475. After thinking like that, I made my mind pure. At that time, I held three red (lotus) flowers and threw them in the air. 1476. As soon as I threw them into the air, the flowers spread out. They remain there on the head, with the flower stalk at the top, the flower mouth at the bottom. 1477. After seeing it, anyone who belonged to the human race uttered a shout of praise, and the gods in the air performed an act of praise: 1478. “Miracles have appeared in the world thanks to this. into the action of the supreme Buddha. We will all listen to the Dharma through the action of the flowers.” 1479. The Knower of the World Padumuttara, the recipient of offerings, standing right on the road, said these verses: 1480. "The young man who made offerings to the Buddha with three pink lotuses, I will praise him. Please listen to Me. 1481. (This person) will be happy in the world of gods for one hundred thousand kalpas, and will be the Lord of the gods who rules over the heavenly kingdom for thirty kalpas. 1482. Immediately will appear a palace named Mahāvitthārika, with a length of three hundred do-weeks, a width of one hundred and fifty do-weeks. 1483. And four hundred thousand spires will be revealed, with noble pointed roofs filled with large beds. 1484. Hundreds of thousands of koṭi fairies skilled in dance and lyrics, as well as proficient in performing musical instruments, will gather around. 1485. The kingdom's territory was vast, and could not be measured in terms of numbers. 1490. After enjoying the two attainments, without disaster, without danger, when the last life is reached (this person) will reach Nirvana.” 1491. Indeed, the Buddha was clearly seen by me, the business was skillfully done; after offering three pink lotus flowers, I have enjoyed three attainments. 1492. Today, I am the one who has attained the Dharma, fully liberated. There is a bright red lotus that will be maintained above my head. 1493. While Master Padumuttara was preaching about my work, there was the realization of the Dharma by thousands of sentient beings and lives. 1494. (Since) I made offerings to the Buddha one hundred thousand kalpas ago, I no longer know the suffering scene; this is the fruit of the three pink lotuses. 1495. My afflictions have been burned away, all existences have been erased, all taints have been eradicated, now there is no more rebirth. 1496. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberations, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Tipadumiya[24] said these verses like that. The Chronicles of Elder Tipadumiya is the tenth part. --ooOoo-- Summary The elder with the garland, who has the contemplation of footprints, one who has a contemplation (of the Buddha), one who offers a lotus root, one who meditates on a portion (of food), one who offers grass, one who offers sewing needles, one who has pāṭali flowers, one who stands clasped hands, the taste has three pink lotus; (total) there are seventy-five verses. The Nāgasamāla product is the eighth. --ooOoo-- IX. PRODUCT TIMIRAPUPPHIYA 81. Chronicles of the Elder Timirapupphiya 1497. I went down the river at the bank of the Candabhāgā river and I saw the recluse sitting, pure, undisturbed. 1498. At that place, after making the mind pure, at that time I thought like this: "Having passed, this person will help to overcome. Having trained, this taste will help with training. 1499. Has been free, (this position) will help for self. Having been calm, (this position) will help calm. Having been liberated, (this one) will help to be liberated. And having Nirvana, (this one) will help Nirvana." 1500. Having thought thus for myself, I took the timira flower and sprinkled it on the crown of the great hermit Siddhattha's head. 1501. I put my hands together and circumambulated. After prostrating at the feet of the Master, I departed in the other direction. 1502. Not long after leaving, (the lion) king of beasts attacked me. While following the mountainside, I fell right there. 1503. (Since) I have offered the flower ninety-four kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of making offerings to the Buddha. 1504. (Previously) fifty-six kalpas, there were exactly seven persons with great reputation as the Wheel-turning Kings who achieved seven kinds of treasures and possessed great power. 1505. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberations, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. Seven years old from birth, I left home life without family. I have bowed down at the feet of the Guru with a pure mind. 1507. After making offerings to the path passed by the Blessed One with a joyful mind, then having gained faith, I performed the folding of my hands with my hands. 1509. And when I was seen by the hero, I went east facing. 1522. After returning to the hermitage, I went to the shelter. I took the bag of supplies and went into the hills. 1523. The python with a horrible appearance of terrible power tormented me. I remembered my previous job and died there. 1524. (Since) I have offered the flower thirty-one lifetimes ago, I no longer know the suffering; this is the fruit of the flower offering. 1525. There was a festival at the Great Bodhi tree of the Blessed One Vipassī. While going about my ordination, I approached the festival. 1543. (Formerly) forty-nine kalpas, thirty-two rulers of the people named Samantacchadana were the Wheel-turners. 1570. In the past, ninety-one kalpas ago, there were seven Vajira named the Wheel-turning Kings who achieved seven kinds of treasures, with great power. 1575. Ever since I had offered fragrant garlands ninety-four kalpas ago, thanks to the precious fruit of actions performed to the Buddha in a special way, I no longer knew suffering; this is the fruit of making offerings to the Buddha. 1580. (Previously) thirty-nine lives, there were sixteen named Devagandha. They were the Wheel-turning Kings. 1581. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberations, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Gandhamāliya[35] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Gandhamāliya is the fifth part. --ooOoo-- 96. Chronicles of Elder Tipupphiya 1582. Previously, I was a wild animal hunter in the wild forest. After seeing the green papaya tree, I laid down three flowers. 1583. 1584. At that time, I plucked the dead leaves and threw them outside. After paying homage to the pāṭali tree, it is as if (respecting) the Fully Enlightened One, the World Leader Vipassī, who is pure inside, pure outside, skillfully liberated, no more contraband or in front of me,[36] I ended up living in that place. 1585. (Since) I made offerings to the Bodhi tree ninety-one kalpas ago, I no longer know the suffering scene; this is the fruit of making offerings to the Bodhi tree. 1586. Thirty-three kalpas ago, thirteen kings named Samantapāsādika were the Wheel-turning Kings who achieved seven kinds of treasures and had great power. 1587. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Elder Tipupphiya[37] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Tipupphiya is the sixth part. --ooOoo-- 97. Chronicles of Elder Madhupiṇḍika 1588. I have seen the supreme hermit Siddhattha, who received offerings in the vast jungle, with little noise, without disturbance. 1589. He is a species of Dragon Statue with the state of Nirvana, like a purebred bull, like the shining star osadhī, revered by the assembly of gods. My happiness was overflowing, and immediately wisdom was born to me. 1590. After offering honey to the Guru who had just come out of meditation, I bowed down at the Master's feet and left, facing east. 1591. (Formerly) thirty-four lives, I was King Sudassana, and at the meal immediately honey and lotus roots flowed, a rain of honey fell; this is the fruit of past karma.. 1592. Ever since I've offered honey ninety-four kalpas ago, I no longer know the realm of suffering; this is the fruit of the honey offering. 1593. Thirty-four kalpas ago, those four Sudassanas were the Wheel-turning Kings who achieved seven kinds of treasures, having great power. 1594. Four analytical (wisdom), ―nt― I have practiced the Buddha's teaching. Venerable Venerable Madhupiṇḍika[38] uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Madhupiṇḍika is the seventh part. --ooOoo-- 98. Chronicles of Elder Senāsanadāyaka 1595. I offered a carpet of leaves to the Blessed One Siddhattha. I have arranged objects and flowers around. 1596. I have enjoyed such a lovely and precious castle. And flowers of great value poured forth from my bed. 1597. I lay in my decorated bed, lined with flowers, and immediately there was a rain of flowers on my bed. 1598. (Since) I offered a carpet of leaves ninety-four kalpas ago, I no longer know the suffering; this is the treasure of the carpet. 1599. Formerly in the fifth life, Those seven rulers of the people named Tiṇasantharaka were born, who were Wheel-turning Kings. 1601. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Senāsanadāyaka[39] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Senāsanadāyaka is the eighth part. --ooOoo-- 99. Chronicles of the Elder Veyyāvaccaka 1601. There was an extremely crowded group of people coming to the Blessed One Vipassī. I am an active servant in all things. 1602. And I do not have anything worthy of offering to the Great Hermit, the Great Hermit. I have bowed down at the feet of the Guru with a pure mind. 1603. Since I have performed service ninety-one kalpas ago, I have known no suffering; this is the fruit of service. 1604. And before in the eighth life, I was King Sucintita, a Wheel-turner, accomplished in the seven treasures, of great power. 1605. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. Venerable Venerable Veyyāvaccaka[40] uttered these verses like that. The record of the elder Veyyāvaccaka is the ninth part. --ooOoo-- 100. Chronicles of Elder Buddhupaṭṭhāka 1606. I was the whistleblower and conch shell (announcement) of the Blessed One Vipassī. I am constantly engaged in service to the Sage, the Great Hermit. 1607. Behold the fruit of such service to the Protector of the World. There are sixty thousand musicians always around me. 1608. (Since) I served the Great Hermit ninety-one kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of service. 1609. Previously twenty-four lives, sixteen kings named Mahānigghosa were Wheel-turners of great power. 1610. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. Venerable Venerable Buddhupaṭṭhāka[41] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Buddhupaṭṭhāka is the tenth part. --ooOoo-- Summary (Offering) of lime mortar, taste of well thought, (half) piece of cloth, sewing needle, taste of fragrant garland, taste of three flowers, honey, place sitting, the service, and the person serving; (in total) exactly sixty verses are narrated in this chapter. In the past eighty-seven lives, the seven named Mahāreṇu are the Kings who have accomplished seven kinds of treasures. 1616. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Thera Bhikkhādāyaka thus uttered these verses. The record of the elder Bhikkhādāyaka is the first part. --ooOoo-- 102. Chronicles of the Elder Ñāṇasaññaka 1617. The Buddha, the Great Hermit, had a bright yellow skin like a purebred bull, like an elephant mātaṅga (to age) abstinent in three places. . 1618. I have seen the Great Elder of the world walking on the road, illuminating in all directions like the full moon. 1619. Having made my mind pure in (his) wisdom, I folded my hands and bowed down to Siddhattha with a pure mind, with joy. 1620. Since I have done that work ninety-four kalpas ago, I no longer know the suffering; this is the fruit of contemplation on wisdom (of the Buddha). 1621. In the past 73 kalpas, the sixteen leading human beings were the Wheel-turning Kings who achieved seven kinds of treasures and had great power. 1622. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Ñāṇasaññaka[42] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Ñāṇasaññaka is the second part. --ooOoo-- 103. Chronicles of the Elder Uppalahatthi 1623. At that time, I was a garland maker residing in (city) Tivarā. I have seen the Buddha, the Immaculate, the World Leader Siddhattha. 1624. 1625. With a pure faith, with joy in mind, I offered a bouquet of flowers. Due to the influence of that karma, wherever I am born, I enjoy the growth fruit of my previously well done, surrounded by the good people of Malla; this is the fruit of making offerings to the Buddha. 1626. (Since) I have offered flowers ninety-four kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of making offerings to the Buddha. 1627. Considering the ninety-four (kalpas) except the present time, there were five hundred kings named Najjūpama in that place. 1628. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberations, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Uppalahatthiya uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Uppalahatthiya is the third part. --ooOoo-- 104. Chronicles of the Elder Padapūjaka 1629. I offered jasmine flowers to the Blessed One Siddhattha. I laid down seven flowers at (His) feet with joy. 1630. Because of that, I am now superior to humans and gods. I maintain my last life in the Dharma of the Fully Enlightened One. 1631. (Since) I have offered flowers ninety-four kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of the flower offering. 1632. Previously in the fifth life, there were thirteen Wheel-turning Kings named Samantagandha who were the rulers of the people (conquering) the four directions. 1633. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberations, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. Venerable Venerable Padapūjaka[43] uttered these verses like that. The record of the elder Padapūjaka is the fourth part. --ooOoo-- 105. Chronicles of Elder Muṭṭhipupphiya 1634. At that time, I was a garland maker named Sudassana. I have seen the Buddha, the Immaculate One, the Most High of the world, the Human Niu. 1635. I took the jasmine flower and made an offering to (the Buddha) Padumuttara. Have a visionWith a clean, well-intentioned person, I have attained the Divine Eye. 1636. Due to the offering of this flower and due to the aspirational powers of the mind, I did not go to a miserable state for a hundred thousand kalpas. 1637. Thirty-six kalpas ago, there were sixteen kings named Devuttara who were wheel-turners of great power. 1638. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Muṭṭhipupphiya[44] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Muṭṭhipupphiya is the fifth part. --ooOoo-- 106. Chronicles of the Elder Udakapūjaka 1639. (I have seen) the Fully Enlightened One, whose skin color is bright yellow, shining like a flame from melted butter, burning like a sacrificial flame, is travel by air. 1640. I scooped up water with my hand and threw it into the air. The Great Hero, the Buddha, the Compassionate, the Hermit received. 1641. After knowing my intention, the Master named Padumuttara, standing in the air, uttered this verse: 1642. "Due to the offering of this water and due to the arising of rapture, (he) not be reborn in a miserable state for a hundred thousand kalpas.” 1643. By doing so in the Lord of men, the Most High of the world, the Human Bull, after giving up superiority and loss, I attained the status of Immovable. 1644. (Previously) six thousand five hundred aeons, the three Wheel-turning Kings named Sahassarāja were the rulers of the people (conquering) the four directions. 1645. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberations, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Venerable Udakapūjaka[45] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Udakapūjaka is the sixth part. --ooOoo-- 107. Chronicles of the Elder Naḷamāliya 1646. Buddha Padumuttara, the Chief Elder of the world like that, such a peaceful person sat down on the grass. 1647. After taking the reed wreath and tying it into a fan, I offered it to the Buddha, the Lord of mankind. 1648. The Omniscient One, the World Leader, received the fan. After knowing my intention, he uttered this verse: 1649. “Just as My body is cooled, anger is not known, so may your mind be liberated. from the three kinds of fire.” 1650. All the gods who are dependent on the forest have gathered. We listen to the teachings of the Buddha which makes the donor happy. 1651. Sitting there in front of the Assembly of Bhikkhus, the Blessed One, while making the benefactor happy, uttered these verses: 1652. “By the offering of this fan and by the aspirational powers of the mind, (this person) will become a Wheel-turning King named Subbata. 1653. Through the remnants of that karma, motivated by the pure factor, (this person) will become a Wheel-turning King named Māluta. 1654. Due to the offering of this fan and due to the completeness of the reverence, (this person) does not go to suffering for a hundred thousand kalpas.” 1655. (Formerly) thirty thousand kalpas, thirty-eight named Subbata. (Formerly) twenty-nine thousand kalpas, (had) eight persons named Māluta. 1656. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberations, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Venerable Naḷamāliya[46] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Naḷamāliya is the seventh part. (The seventh chant is ended.) --ooOoo-- 108. Chronicles of the Elder Āsanūpaṭṭhāpaka 1657. After having gone deep into the jungle with little noise and no disturbance, I made an offering of the lion throne to (the Buddha) Atthadassī like that. . 1658. I took a handful of garlands and circumambulated Him. After serving the Guru, I departed, facing north. 1659. By doing so in the Sovereign of mankind, the Supreme Being of the world, the Human Bull, I myself attained Nirvana, all beings were wiped out. 1660. Since I have made alms before one thousand and eight hundred kalpas, I no longer know the suffering; this is the treasure of the lion throne. 1661. Seven hundred kalpas ago, (I was) the Kingslayer of Sannibbāpaka, is a Wheel-turning King who has accomplished seven kinds of treasures and has great power. 1662. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberations, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Āsanūpaṭṭhāpaka[47] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Āsanūpaṭṭhāpaka is the eighth part. --ooOoo-- 109. Chronicles of the Elder Biḷālidāyaka 1663. I lived on a carpet of leaves not far from the Himalayas. At that time, I gained a liking for grasses and got into the habit of sleeping (in the carpet of leaves). 1664. After bringing and preparing the apple(s), bhallātaka fruit, and billa fruit, I dug up the kalamba, biḷālī, and takkala tuberous roots. 1665. After learning of my intentions, the Knower of the World Padumuttara, the recipient of offerings, came to my area. 1666. When the Dragon Statue, the God of the gods, The Taurean came, I offered the biḷālī tuber and placed it in the bowl. 1667. At that time, while making me happy, Dai Hung used life. After using life, the Omniscient One said this verse: 1668. "After making your mind pure, you have offered biḷālī tubers to Me, you will not go to a miserable state for a hundred thousand kalpas. ” 1669. Fifty-four kalpas ago, (I was) a person named Sumekhaliya, a Wheel-turning King who attained seven kinds of treasures and possessed great power. 1670. (This) is my last in rotation, all beings have been wiped away. I maintain my last life in the Dharma of the Fully Enlightened One. 1671. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Biḷālidāyaka[48] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Biḷālidāyaka is the ninth part. --ooOoo-- 110. Chronicles of the Elder Reṇupūjaka 1672. The Fully Enlightened One has a golden skin color as dazzling as the sun with a hundred rays of light, making all directions glow like the full moon. . 1673. He was surrounded by the Disciples as if the earth was surrounded by the seas. I took the nāga flower and offered the pollen powders to (the Buddha) Vipassī. 1674. (Since) I have offered powdered pollen ninety-one lifetimes ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of making offerings to the Buddha. 1675. In the past forty-five kalpas ago, I was a king-slayer named Reṇu, a Wheel-turning-King who attained seven kinds of treasures and possessed great power. 1676. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I have practiced the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Thera Reṇupūjaka[49] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Reṇupūjaka is the tenth part. --ooOoo-- Summary The taste of food offering, the taste of wisdom contemplation, the taste of the bouquet (flower), the taste of the feet, the taste of holding the flower, the taste of water offering, garland of reeds, attendants, offerings of biḷālī bulbs, and pollen; (total) there are sixty-six verses. The Bhikkhādāyī is the eleventh chapter. --ooOoo-- XII. PRODUCTS MAHĀPARIVĀRA 111. Chronicles of the Elder Mahāparivāra 1677. At that time, the World Honored One Vipassī, the world's Chief Elder, the Human Niu, had entered Bandhuma with sixty-eight thousand persons. 1678. After leaving the city, I went to the stupa on the island. I have seen the Buddha, the Immaculate, the recipient of offerings. 1679. There are eighty-four thousand yakshas in the vicinity (have) reverently served me, like the collectives of gods (serving) the god Inda. 1680. Then I went out of the palace and took the cloth. I have bowed my head and made offerings to the Great Hermit. 1681. “Oh Buddha! Oh Dharma! O achievement of our Guru! Because of the Buddha's power, the earth trembled." 1682. And after seeing that wondrous miracle that made my hairs crawl, I made my mind so pure in my faith in the Buddha, the Lord of mankind. 1683. Having purified my mind and offered the cloth to the Guru, here I am with the mandarins and entourage who have gone to take refuge (the Buddha). 1684. Since I have done that work ninety-one kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of making offerings to the Buddha. 1685. Fifteen eons ago, there were sixteen people named Suvāhana, who were the Kings who turned the wheel of kings who achieved seven kinds of treasures, with great majesty. 1686. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberations, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Mahāparivāra[50] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Mahāparivāra is the first part. --ooOoo-- 112. Chronicles of Elder Sumaṅgala 1687. The noble Conqueror Atthadassī, the world's Chief Elder, the Human Bull, after leaving the residence, went to the lake. 1688. After bathing and drinking water, the Fully Enlightened One, the World-Honored One, put on a robe and stood there, observing all directions. 1689. I went into the palace and saw the Leader of the World. I became rejoicing, with a rejoicing heart then I clapped my hands. 1690. The Buddha is shining like the sun, shining like a block of gold. I did my best in dance, lyrics and five kinds of musical instruments (offering to him). 1691. Wherever I go to be reborn, whether I am a divine being or a human being, I am superior to all sentient beings, my fame is widespread. 1692. “Superman, I salute Thee! O Supreme Being, I salute Thee! White sage, after making himself happy, he made others happy. ” 1693. After considering and sitting down, after having created joy at the level of good practice, after serving the Perfectly Enlightened One, I was reborn in the Dauntless heaven. 1694. One thousand six hundred kalpas ago, there were two, then nine of the same name Ekacintita, are the wheel-turning kings who have accomplished the seven kinds of treasures and have great power. 1695. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberations, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Sumaṅgala said these verses like that. The record of the elder Sumaṅgala is the second part. --ooOoo-- 113. Chronicles of the Elder Saraṇagamaniya 1696. The ongoing battle between the two Heavenly Kings had turned chaotic, and loud shouts were heard. 1697. The Knower of the World Padumuttara, the recipient of offerings, the Master standing in the air caused the crowd to be shaken. 1698. All the gods rejoiced, let go of their armor and weapons, and then bowed down to the Fully Enlightened One and sat down, attentive. 1699. Knowing our intentions, he raised his voice. As one with compassion, The One Who Knows the World has helped a crowd of people to achieve Nirvana: 1700. “A person with an angry mind harms a life, because of that anger of his mind (this person) is reborn in hell. 1701. For example, an elephant confronting in a battle destroys many lives, so please make your mind still, do not kill again and again.” 1702. Even the armies of the two yaksha kings were amazed. And so they went to take refuge in the Sovereign of the perfect world. 1703. The Right Eye made people think, moreover, they even helped them. While he was examining with the gods, he went north facing. 1704. (This is) the first time I have come to take refuge in the Sovereign of men, I have not gone to misery in a hundred thousand kalpas. 1705. (Formerly) thirty thousand kalpas, sixteen chariot-leader kings named Mahādundubhi were already Wheel-turning Kings. 1706. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberations, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Thera Saraṇagamanīya[51] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Saraṇagamanīya is the third part. --ooOoo-- 114. Chronicles of the Elder Ekāsaniya 1707. At that time, I was a heavenly king named Varuṇa. Armed with the right means of transport, I served the Omniscient One. 1708. When the Protector of the World, the Supreme Being, Atthadass, entered Nirvana, I took up all the musical instruments and went to the supreme Bodhi tree. 1709. I have combined (the sound of) cymbals into song and dance, I have served the supreme Bodhi tree as (serving) the Perfectly Enlightened being in front of me. 1710. After serving that Bodhi tree, which is the herb that grows on the earth, I crossed my legs into the lotus position and died there. 1711. Satisfied with my karma, I gained faith in the supreme Bodhi tree. Because of that pure faith in my heart, I was born in the realm of Hoa Lac Thien. 1712. While circling in this realm and in the world among men and among the gods, sixty thousand musical instruments surrounded me all the time. 1713. Five hundred kalpas ago, there were thirty-four slayers named Subāhu, (them) who were accomplished seven kinds of treasures. 1714. For me, the three types of fire have been extinguished, all existence has been erased. I maintain my last life in the Dharma of the Fully Enlightened One. 1715. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The venerable thera Ekāsaniya[52] uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Ekāsaniya is the fourth part. --ooOoo-- 115. Chronicles of the Elder Suvaṇṇapupphiya 1716. The Blessed One named Vipassī, the world's Chief Elder, the Human Niu, was sitting and preaching the Immortal Path to the masses. 1717. Having thus listened to His Dhamma as the Lord of mankind, I offered the Buddha four golden flowers. 1718. At that time, there was a golden roof (cover) all over the assembly. The radiance of the Buddha and the luminosity of gold were the source of immense light. 1719. With an elated heart, with a joyful mind, full of excitement, I put my hands together. I have been a source of happiness, a source of happiness in the present time for those people. 1720. After requesting the Perfectly Enlightened One and paying homage to the one with good practice, After giving rise to excitement, I went back to my abode. 1721. Entering the abode, I remembered the supreme Buddha. Because of that faith in my heart, I was reborn in the heaven of Dau Tat. 1722. (Since) I have offered flowers ninety-one kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of making offerings to the Buddha. 1723. Forty-three kalpas ago, there were sixteen kings named Nemisammata, who were wheel-turning Kings of great power. 1724. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberations, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. Venerable Venerable Suvaṇṇapupphiya[53] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Suvaṇṇapupphiya is the fifth part. --ooOoo-- 116. Chronicles of Elder Citakapūjaka 1725. I dwelt at the Rājāyatana tree with my officials and retinues. At that time the World-Honored One Sikhī, the relative of the world, Nirvana. 1726. With pure faith, with joy in mind, I went to the place of cremation. There, after performing the instrument, I laid down the perfume and the flower wreath. 1727. After making offerings at the cremation pyre, I bowed down to the crematorium. I went back to my abode, with a pure mind, with a joyful mind. 1728. 1729. Entering the residence, I remembered the cremation offering. By doing so in the Lord of men, the Chief Elder of the world, the Man-Taurus, I have enjoyed success among the gods and among men. After giving up the odds, I attained Immovable status. 1730. (Since) I have offered the flower thirty-one kalpas ago, I no longer know suffering; this is the fruit of the cremation offering. 1731. Twenty-nine kalpas ago, sixteen kings (with the same name) Uggata were the Wheel-turning Kings of great power. 1732. Four (wisdom) analysis, ―nt― I practiced the Buddha's teaching. The Venerable Elder Citakapūjaka[54] uttered these verses thus. The Chronicles of Elder Citakapūjaka is the sixth part. --ooOoo-- 117. Chronicles of the Elder Buddhasaññaka 1733. At that time, the Great One of the world Vipassī had given up maintaining longevity. The globe, the earth surrounded by water, trembled. 1734. At the end of the Buddha's life, my abode, which was roofed, spread out, and decorated with garlands of flowers, was also shaken. 1735. When my abode was shaken, fear arose in me. What happened for what reason? For what reason did the immense source of light appear? 1736. (Ukrainian) Vessavaṇa went to that place and reassured the crowd that: "There is no concern for life, you should be attentive, calm." 1737. “Oh Buddha! Oh Dharma! O achievement of our Guru! While that was arising, the earth was shaken by itself." 1738. After praising the Buddha's power, I was happy in the heavens for a lifetime. In the remaining lives, good deeds were done by me. 1739. Since I attained that contemplation ninety-one aeons ago, I have known no suffering; this is the fruit of contemplating the Buddha. 1740. Fourteen lives ago, I was a king of splendor named Samita, a Wheel-turner of great power. 1741. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberation, and six superior wisdom have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. Venerable Venerable Buddhasaññaka[55] spoke these verses like that. The record of the elder Buddhasaññaka is the seventh part. --ooOoo-- 118. Chronicles of Elder Maggasaññaka 1742. Lost in the vast forest, the Wise Ones who lived in the forest of Buddha Padumuttara wandered around like blind people. 1743. After contemplating on the Fully Enlightened One with the name Padumuttara, those sons of the Wise One were lost in the great forest. 1744. From my residence, I stepped down and went to the side of the bhikkhus. I showed the way and offered food to them. 1745. By doing so in the Lord of men, the Most High of the world, the Human Niu, at the age of seven from birth, I have attained Arahantship. 1746. Five hundred kalpas ago, twelve persons named Sacakkhu were the Wheel-turning Kings who attained seven kinds of treasures. 1747. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberations, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Maggasaññaka[56] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Maggasaññaka is the eighth part. --ooOoo-- 119. Chronicles of Elder Paccupaṭṭhānasaññaka 1748. At that time, shortly after the death of the Venerable Atthadassī, I was born in the yaksha lineage, and I gained fame. 1749. For me, it is really difficult to achieve, difficult to shine, difficult to rise, is the fact that the Right Eye has passed away Nirvana while I was searching for wealth. 1750. The Sāgara named Sāgara knew my intention. Intending to join me, he approached me (saying): 1751. “What makes you sad? Do not be alarmed, wise man, practice the Dharma. The attainment of the seed (enlightenment) has been bestowed upon all by the Buddha. 1752. 1753. Those who make offerings to the Fully Enlightened One of the World Leaders (when he) is still alive, and those who offer his relics when he has passed away, even though the oil is only as small as a mustard seed, when the peace is pure. faith in the mind is equivalent, the great merits obtained are equivalent; therefore, have the stupa built and then offer the relics of the Conqueror." 1754. After listening to the words of the Sāgara, I made the stupa of the Buddha. I have served the supreme stupa of the Wise One for five years. 1755. By doing so in the Lord of men, the Most High of the world, the Human Niu, After enjoying the attainment I attained the rank of Arahant. 1756. And seven hundred kalpas ago, four (same) names Bhūripañña were the Wheel-turning Kings who accomplished seven kinds of treasures and possessed great power. 1757. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberations, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. Venerable Venerable Paccupaṭṭhānasaññaka[57] uttered these verses thus. The record of the elder Paccupaṭṭhānasaññaka is the ninth part. --ooOoo-- 120. Chronicles of the Elder Jātipūjaka 1758. When the Vipassī was giving birth, a vast source of light appeared. And the earth and the sea and the mountains trembled. 1759. And the prophets predicted that: "The Buddha, who is great to all beings, will appear in the world and will help people." 1760. After hearing the words of the prophets, I made the birth offering. There is no such offering as the offering of birth. 1761. After doing good deeds, I made my mind pure. After making the birth offering, I passed away in that place. 1762. Wherever I go to be reborn, whether I am a celestial being or a human being, I surpass all sentient beings; this is the fruit of the birth offering. 1763. The nannies who took care of me according to my mind's power could not make me angry; this is the fruit of the birth offering. 1764. Since I have made offerings ninety-one kalpas ago, I have no longer known suffering; this is the fruit of the birth offering. 1765. Formerly in the third life, the thirty-four rulers of the people (with the same name) Supāricāriya were the Wheel-turning Kings of great power. 1766. Four (wisdom) analysis, eight liberations, and six winning positions have been (I) attained; I have been practicing the teachings of the Buddha. The Venerable Elder Jātipūjaka[58] spoke these verses thus. The record of the elder Jātipūjaka is the tenth part. --ooOoo-- Summary The person who has a follower, the Sumaṅgala, the one who takes refuge, the one who has a seat, the one who offers the flower, the one who offers the cremation, the one who thinks about the Buddha, the one who shows the way, the one who has service, taste with birth; (total) ninety verses have been spoken and counted by the wise.
